Newbie thoughts

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Have introduced myself in the relevant section and would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome.

Some thoughts that I would like comments or advice on please.

I have never really shot, other than plinking around with air rifles when I worked on a farm as a kid, I am looking at starting out with a shotgun, getting some clay lessons so that I at least know which end the shot comes out of and increase my chances of clean kills when in the field. I am going to get a 12 gauge as this seems to be the best all rounder, looking at either over and under or semi hopefully that can take steel shot in case of wildfowling in the future, probably 30" barrel as that seems like the compromise for field and clay. Does my reasoning so far seem OK? I will then whilst claying try and get some permissions, if successfull and I get into it will look at getting FAC, but will leave that for a further post. Final thing is I won't be looking at getting a dog to start as I'm in rental that dosn't allow it, so obviously from the research if I go wildfowling would have to do this with someone with a trained dog, but again will leave this for further posts.

In the first instance rabbits, pigeons or vermin when in the field and if permission anything legal and edible I come across!

PS, based in Sutton coldfield in the midlands, so if anyone wants to take pity and show me the ropes, it would be appreciated, obviously after a pint or coffee so you can see I'm relatively sane!

Thanks in advance, if I'm way of the mark please let me know.

hey there,

Well your reasoning seems fairly clear, and 12g is a good popular cartrdge, for i'm thinking 28 to 30 inch barrel would be ideal,

but you'd need to check how the clay grounds feel about semi auto shotguns... so maybe over and under may be best.....

pigeons, and rabbit you could take without dogs... and still have good shooting...

hope you get sorted.

Snap.

Thanks, yes wondered about the semi auto issue, to be honest too bothered, so would it be best to go for over and under to be allowed on all clay grounds? was reasoning semi auto for wildfowling, but that will be a way in the future, when and if I get a dog or become mates with someone with a trained dog.
