contraversial foxes x2 ??

Recommended Posts

went out for some rabbits with other night with one of my mates who passed my DSC level 1 with, got to the first place and not a rabbit to be seen!! some say easterly wind does it??!!

any way on to the next farm and we are barely in to the field, on goes the lamp and 3 foxes are sitting there against the hedge line! now i haven't shot any foxes on this land as yet, mainly because i haven't seen any......but there is plenty there now!

both of us only had .22LR with us ( and yes we both have .22 for foxes before any one starts yapping on) so my mate put on the red filter and gave a little squeak, the first fox started to move in then stopped and refused to come any closer for some reason (possibly a change in wind direction) we opted to get a a little closer in. Once we had got closer on goes the lamp and the fox was broad side, i let a little RWS do its job and it dropped on the spot...that's one tail n the bag.

we then re-scanned the field with the red filter and another was still sitting there but it was right next to a horse so neither of us wanted to take the risk of putting black beauty out of his misery. and the the third fox had gone walk about, so we decided to not trample around the whole field and upset things but to return another night.

a few fields away we had a shone over agate and there was another 2 charlies sitting there! we squeaked and this one came running in flat out. once again it dropped on the spot at about 65-70 yards....a little far admittedly but the job was done cleanly. tails x2 !

unfortunately nether one of us had a camera! like a pair of idiots other wise i woud have posted them up.

ps: i know the .22LR isn't a fox caliber, even though it is one my FAC for fox. and next time i go out there we will take my mates .243, on this occasion we were out and about and so was charlie....so what do you do? shoot it if your confident of the shot and never everpull trigger if your not.

Peace.

i've shot a good few with my .22lr i personally wouldn't shoot over 50yrds though, i would have gone and stuck another in it though just to make sure it was definately dead and not just badly injured and laying low. but like you say if its all you've got and its on your ticket and you can be as sure as possible of a humane kill then go for it! well done

No issues with Charlie at up to 100 yards with a 22LR, but you have to know how to shoot, and if you're not confident then don't do it.

Personally I'd prefer to get in closer than 100, but it will work if your shot is placed right - been there and done it. 22LR silenced can be a very effective tool if the foxes don't mind the lamp but hate the noise of rifle shots - squeak them in and a quiet thump, and the next one's not spooked...

yer i physically skinned the tails:

1: cut a ring at the base of the tail making sure its not to deep

2: "peel" back the skin a little

3: get a stick and split it in half, the place the flat side of each stick either side if the ring you have cut, pinch together and pull firmly.

The tail will come clean off leaving the actuall tail bone on the fox.

4:then soak it in methalayted spirits for 6 weeks and it wont smell and then you can use it for a that feather duster you wanted!

I only learnt this the other week! my first two are still soaking.

Just a hint mate.If you fill the cavity with salt(Be sure to pack it tightly) and leave it for 2-3 weeks then simply tap the salt out you get a better result plus you dont get the discolouration you get with meths and it won't stink of meths for the next two years.

Also if you cut the base of charlies tale as you say you don't need to split any sticks simply grab hold tight with both hands put your foot into the flanks of charlie and pull as hard as you can,A little twist to get it started and "pop" of it comes.

Please dont think I'm dissing your methods mate because im honestly not, just trying to pass a tip on from many years of doing it (honestly I've done hundreds)

Hope you find it easyer

Piece of bailer twine also works just as well as the sticks, easier to carry around, but it can get a bit messy, zip loc bag if you're a fussy type ;) lol

Shot a few foxes with my .22lr when I had it. Done right it puts them down well, not a foxing calibre as you say though.

Whatever works for you is the answer, but the salt is a pain in the arse for me, I find it difficult to get all the way down a damp and tapering tail.....the meths does the job fine for me, only leave about 4 weeks though.

This is easy and simple, I've not had any problems I can recall with any discolouration! I use a big glass screwtop jar, throw the lot in and invert once a week for 4 weeks, job done! I then wash the tail with soap flakes or shampoo (not detergent), rinse thoroughly and dry slowly, the meths smell dissapears!

Filter the meths and re-use for the next, very little waste if you play your cards right!

Like I say, it works for me, but everyone will develop their own favoured method!

I use a welding rod to get salt into the tapper and always works for me.but reading this I'm wondering if its the detergent that i used when employing this method that caused the discolouration ???

I'm going to try it again with your method deker see how it goes.

cheers mate
