fox trap

well i posted on here a while back asking for advice on making a fox trap after it had been in my game hens and i didnt get a reply anyway we got some chickens few month later another one went in and killed the lot they were my dads so he helped me build a trap he welded it all i had it sett for about 2 week and i caught a vixen in it then i sett it again.

 

few days later when i checked the trap the door had been triggerd but no fox which was odd the traps long enough so the fox is well in when it takes the bait and the door drops fast and theres a locking mechnism so the fox carnt lift it and my wire trigger mechanisms has gone along with the rabbit. few days before that though the hen was out that survived the fox attack and the only way that can get out is if you let it out.

 

conclusion: either a fox was in the trap and someone let it out and removed the wire trigger mechanism along with the rabbit bait thinking i wont be able to make another or someones just triggerd the trap and nicked the wire so i carnt use whilst i make another

 

reason i think sommones let it out is because the door drops hard enough to trigger the locking mechanism but the door had been let down slowly so it didnt lock the door in so someone messing about on my field so gonna move the trap. wait till i ctach them theyll have some teeth missing and the trap is out of site behind my hen shed only way they could of seen it is going somewhere there not supposed to be.

john its hard to explain with out a picture. my trap is made out of angel iron and mesh. its a gillatine type i drilled a hole in the angle runners and cut another piece of angle iron about 6 inch long and drilled a hole through that as well so it would just sit millimeters above the door when it was shut then i had to cut a notch out of the 6 inch length and put a bolt and washer with a nylon nut on the end through the holes that i had drilled a bit earlier but left it lose. the mechnism is on the inside of the runner so when the door drops the mechnism just flicks out its not spring loaded or anything.

 

so when the trap sett and the doors up the mechanism ( the 6 inch piece of angle iron on the end of the bolt and nut) sett to fire when the door drops the bit of angle iron just drops from the insdie of the runners and stays hung over the door so if the fox trys lifting it the door just bashes against the piece of 6 inch angle iron.

Rats could activate the trap and then escape through the mesh.It does happen to me occasionally.

A fox can and will lift the door by pulling up on the mesh - add a simple locking device of some sort and you should hold them more securely. And make sure that they cannot tip it over once they are inside as they will bounce around and if it tips Charlie will escape.

 

I learned this the hard way years ago

I used the same trap we just bought them in at the time :lazy: [pest control] i was trapping foxes in a bowling green and had the same problem do-gooders letting them out then the problem is trying to get them to go back into the trap ended up just going in with the .22 Rimmy and sorted the problem best of luck mate.

there is a locking mechanism on it and rats havent done it cause you can only get the triggering device out the trap through the door and it was a full rabbit. the do gooder will be getting a dogooding when i catch erm i dont trap foxes for the good of my health it cause they kill my game hens and have wiped out all my laying hens

As i said mate, its difficult to get them to go back in once some :wankerzo4: has released them, i had to go down to putting live bait into the traps, even then they were still being released by some so ended up shooting during the night best of luck,
