.308 v .243

ok so i ave passed my DSC and the time has come to buy a stalking rifle at last. i have put loads of previous posts up asking what to buy and what not to buy.

 

I used a friends .243 the other night and had 2 dog foxes. it was lovely to shoot and i just cant decide whether to get a variation for a .243 instead of a .308

 

i want something that shoots flat'ish if i was to run a smaller bullet weight in the .308 would this help? argh i don't know what to do! please help.

It depends on what your using the .243 on if it's just foxes i wouldnt bother with a .308 seems a big round to be firing at foxes i would just stick to a .243 on foxes with a big round.

the .243 is a beeter allround rifle for foxs like others i shoot foxs with the .308 and the .243

 

they both kill them wether it be a 70gn out of the .243 or a 150 gn fom the .308 and regardless of ballistics the .243 is cheaper a cheaper roundto buy /load you aint going to eat them !!!

In my view it depends on what you are going to use it for the most and what deer you intend to stalk. If the rifle will say shoot 15 foxes for every deer then the .243 is the way to go. However if it is a stalking rifle with only the odd fox once in a while then go .308.

 

Although I believe that a .243 is a little light for big red's and sika in a dedicated stalking rifle there is no doubt that it will do the job. You have to balance use against caliber.

 

If I was to buy a dual purpose rifle for fox and roe it would be a .243 followed by a 6.5 of some sort.

If you are going to stalk then definatly go for a .308 but if it's mainly fox then as Riohog says a .243 is a cheaper round so i'd stick to that.Valid point riohog

i dont shoot deer yet. but if i was looking for the all round rifle it would be 243 but that depends on what deer you manly shoot. as above if its red and sika then maybe 308 would be your better choice.

 

as a foxing round tho 243 would be very fast and flat with 55 grain bullets or 58 grain bullets.

 

if it was me i would use the 70 grain ammo for foxes. still fast and flat out to foxingranges at night or day. and buck the wind better.

well its going to be for foxes and deer, the reason is i have just found a remingtion sps .243 with mtc viper scope 6-24x56 harris bipod PES moderator had less than 60 rounds through it for £695

buy it if it has only done that amount of rounds

Depending on the PES model, it will unbalanced in my opinion. I have a PES Mod on my hunting .243 and it is very front heavy. The only reason it stays, is that it normally gets used on a Bipod off the landy bonnet, otherwise it would be GONE. (plus I am diverting funds to a new project)

 

It is a heavy MOD, and if truth be known, I would expect that a MOD of that weight is affecting the accuracy somewhat, due to the harmonic effects on the barrel. It alters the point of aim down by a good 6".

 

But..............It is very smooth to shoot, there is no tinniness from the gun, often seen on moderators of lesser build quality, and it is bullet proof! No pun intended.

 

Check how the set-up feels.....make your own mind up!!

I own both and to be honest if you want an all round rifle for vermin and deer then it has to be the .243", if you want a dedicated deer rifle then it has to be the .308. However if I were to start over I would have but one rifle and that would be a 6.5.

i use the .243 as a minly fox calibre, but use it for stalking too, i take reds and fallow, does the job very well, as long as i do my bit...

 

loved the calibre so much i had it revamped as a semi custom.....

 

Not regreted the decision one bit.

I have .243 and .308, I have no axe to grind with either camp, but if you have to get just one rifle the .243 is the one!

thanks very much guys really appreciate all the feed back, i did like the feel of the rifle, i think i would need to put a new trigger in it as it isn't that crisp.....do they do a trigger kit for it? like for the cz 452...if you know what i mean?

 

it felt like a really nice action, i liked the scope as my friend has Viper on his .22 and i have always liked it.

 

i know of the guy that traded it in as he works for a local estate about 2 miles form my house so i am going to pop in and get an opinion from the original owner.

you can gert several different trigger kit for the remington, jewell do an excellent trigger, for them but it is very hard to get

 

set right and will require a smith to get the best from it...

 

i think the trigger price is around 200 quid though..

I had the similar dilemma when I was applying for FAC, I don't do deer yet but I went for .308, one of the reason was cheaper rounds.
