Downunder_Sthn_Ferreter 16
Nice reading once again Shaun, where are you getting all these extracts from? It seem like 'yarding' was a popular way of getting the rabbits to come to you back then. The rabbits over here in England are not dictated to by the need for fresh water, they seem to get enough from the moisture in the green matter they eat, so don't have to move a long way to find it. Like the idea of it though. Yes the heat worked in favour of the rabbit gatherers regarding the rabbits need for water. Tank sitting was another popular method as was tank baiting. Poison would be laid near the tank as the farmers knew they would arrive there later each day for their drink. Most of the stuff i have sourced from here : http://contribute.abc.net.au/_activity/profile_page_rss/4413433/32422.html?as=32422 An ABC initiative marking the 150th year that Rabbits have been here for. If you type in Rabbit Plague Australia in Google you will find alot of different perspectives of the days of old. Cheers, Shaun Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
This thread is one of the most intresting I have ever read on here. I did as you suggested Shaun and did the google search, it threw up a lot of facts and figures about rabbits that we in the UK cannot begin to comprehend. Another factor that was intresting was how the rabbit changed the habits of Australian preditors. Like in this video. TC Quote Link to post

higgins 75
Fantastic thread you got going here Shaun, those rabbit numbers are truly mind boggling,i still can remember the clips being shown on the news about controlling them in the early seventies, the weather was the main factor for breeding rapidly ,though can't make out what they lived on,it's good to read about and it's the stuff we all dream of over here, just imagine those numbers over here, atb Shaun, Higgins.
