Very Expensive Mooch

I was going to road walk the mutts today, then go home and get some chores done round the house. At the last minute I changed my mind, and headed down to the woods instead. Crossed through to the farm, put the dogs over the fence and was having a grand mooch on some very very boggy fields - nearly lost my wellies a couple of times!

 

Had one run on a rabbit, missed, and was just letting the mutts lark about. Got to a low fence, my lurcher went to hop it, slipped in the mud and snagged her tissue paper skin on the barbed wire.

 

I ambled over not thinking much about it, stepped over the fence (it's very low), and she stood next to me and bled all over my wellies I only had a quick look at her and thought it might not be so bad. Put her on the lead and went round to my mate's, who's closer than my place. Dog left a charming trail of blood all the way there.

 

Got there, hosed her down a bit, and discovered she'd peeled the skin on her chest back like the lid on a tin of tuna :sick: Big flap of skin about 5" by 2" just hanging down off the deepest part of her chest.

 

Emergency trip to the vet, major stitch job and 200 b*****d quid later she's home. I think they were taking the mick with thier choice of vet wrap tho

 

I'm not a big fan of banning this and that but I swear if I had the power I'd have every scrap of that lethal barbed wire removed from the countryside

Well cúagusgiorraí I'd probably agree with you there. Outrageous cost. Except, it was one of those wounds I knew I couldn't deal with myself. It couldn't be stapled or glued or just left to heal on it's own - it's in an awkward spot. They had to do tension incisions near the wound to losen her skin a bit, in order to pull it back up and stitch it properly. Twas a real mess.

 

Needs must, as they say. She's worth it 50 times over.

Well, she managed to get her back foot into the vet wrap and dislodge the dressing. So I removed it this morning and was horrified by what I found.

 

As I mentioned they did tension sutures to allow more give to the skin for stitching and healing. Not an uncommon practice: I've seen it done before - I've worked with vets in the past.

 

But whatever cowboy did that deserves a slap. There are far too many of these 'sutures', too close together. Her skin has the consistency of an eyelid if you get what I mean - and ever time she moves they pull and open. One wrong move and they'll all blend together and leave massive open wounds next to the stitches.

 

This is what I paid 200 quid for. Look away if you're squeamish.

I'm so pissed off at the vet I don't even trust myself to ring them and complain.

I've not seen a lot of stitches in that area but that looks one hell of a mess. I'd be straight back at the vets.

Lurchergirl. Please take that dog to a proper vet. Explain the situation and get the new vet to send the bill to the old vet. That is as amutuerish job as ive seen in a long while. atb stabba.

That is shocking! The mess the vet made I mean. DO TAKE THE DOG TO A PROPER VET, though I'm sorry to say that they might not be able to do much. It looks as though they've simply cut away the hanging strip of skin and tried to pull it all together: ridiculous!!!

 

I'd refuse to pay them: that will be months and months before the dog has healed, with all the ongoing risk of infection those idiots have caused. Fingers crossed the dog will be alright. I'll be thinking of you both over Christmas.
