Day 17

Recommended Posts

Woke very ill this morning. :drink: Cannot remember getting in even. I wanted a day off but the old feller had bullied me yesterday into going today. Just went in the old fellers motor this time, so no quad, on some of the easy ground.

Took the runners, and I put 2 jills in the box on purpose. (I didn't feel like digging today.)

We knew the pickings would be slim as we had covered most of the ground a while ago. Got a mark, put the jills in, within a few minutes they were into a rabbit. Boxed it up, and shook my head. Near 5ft for the first dig of the day with a hangover from hell. The old feller went walkabout.

Usually i would not be really bothered, but today was different. It took me the best part of 25 mins to get down there. I was useless.

The rabbit was a gonner due to the time it took to get down, and one of the jills was blocked in by the bunny.

Rest of the day was a bit steadier, the dogs picking the odd ones up, and a little more ferreting.

Anyhow, did not get the end of day shot, as the old feller had started gutting whilst i picked a few mole traps up, but just managed to scrape 20 bunnys in the end.

Remind me never to drink so much again will you!

At least you where out mate ,Must be a few ferals there due to those numbers ?

Must be loads of them. Started coming across the odd one in the warrens last season. They seem to set up camp in the big warrens, picking off the residents, It's funny how there can still be rabbits living in the big warrens when one of these is at home. Usually you hear your ferrets hissing and letting off the scent when they come up against them. I've dug down locating a ferret thinking its on a kill, but when i've got through, its been eating a half eaten rabbit corpse, amongs a pile of fur and bones. (Much like you find in your own ferrets bed chamber.) This year there must have been a lot of breeding pairs to throw out this many. Just hope we can get them under control. But i'm a little worried they may be more widespread than i first thought. They are not just on the grassy lowlands where i thought they would be, seeing them high up on the moorland has opened my eyes even further. Only intensive trapping is going to thin them out. I'm pretty sure no wild animal will tackle them.

Another season of this amount breeding will for certain bugger up the rabbiting.

That 1st pic of feral seems a big in brimmer aswell mate! have your ferrets been up against one of these ina set?

gary

A couple of times mate. There's a big fuss, but usually they just try to evict your ferrets.

Every one i have had dealings with are strong massive lumps, nobodys working ferrets are in the same league as these.

I'll try to get some film of the beasts when I start putting the cage traps down.

Shame they have to go really.
