shotgun any good?

Is a single barrel 12 bore shotgun with a 32 inch barrel any good for shooting rabbits on the lamp or at dusk?..ATB CRAIG

trouble with using a 12bore on the lamp is your going to get very few shots then the rabbits will be spooked and dissaper

personaly i use either air rifle, fac air rifle or .22 rim fire

at a push would maybe use hush power 410

Single barrel 12g have their uses and are very effective, however, there are potential issues...

.....first off just the one shot

....then there is the weight, usually light, at least the Baikel sitting in my cabinet is, kicks like a mule with any half decent load...

Very few made these days, on the plus side, shop around and you can pick up one for £25...I did at the Game Fair!

Must be worth it for that, but I'm still not quite sure what for!! :whistling::hmm:

In the summer, you can stroll around in the late evenings and usually get quite a few of this years births - because they don't know to run away from thing that goes bang yet.

For lamping I'd say it was too loud but a shotgun is well worth having. I only got one initially because it was only going to cost me a tenner more to get my SGC and FAC together. Then managed to pick up a nice old SxS Baikal for £60. It doesn't get lots of use but very handy for ferreting and has taken a few pigeons in the garden too.

Yes, not bad at all. The fact that you can move faster and not worry about back stops is a bonus. The gun will only be worth a few pounds so it matter not about the rain, blood or mud. 30mm mounts normally fit the barrel, so you can sling an LED torch under the barrel but a head lamp is better with the shotgun. The only real issue is sound and some farmers hate the sound of the shotguns at night, would you be happy if it were your back garden someone was shooting in?

I've used shotguns, airguns and rim fires for lamping, in fact I have a single barrel .410 here which I solely use for lamping rabbits, all have a time and a place.

That's a very valid point, all land, neighbours situations are different and sometimes not an issue, but I never use the 12g for lamping and do not allow anyone else with me either!!

The noise "can" travel 5 Miles on a still summer evening!!

if its all you've got mate use it, i had a single barreled baikal 12b i shoved a recoil pad on it (took it pigeon shooting and after about 70-80 32g n06 shoulder was smashed), i used it for everything including lamping fair enough you only get the one shot off then have to wait a while but you soon learn to pick your shots better, i had a lightforce mount on my hatsan escort too for foxing/rabbiting good set-up too

Again, it all depends up on where the gun will be used. I have farms that are 3500 acres and for a fact the land owner couldn't give a hoot what I use or when. I also have farms that are little more than 100 acres, for which I can only use the little .22rf. Back when I started out, I used to lamp the farm with a 12 bore and head lamp, nothing was ever said and I certainly never worried about the sound of the report. The shotgun is a very safe tool for lamping. On land that I lease I would use which ever would get the job done in the safest way, sound level would be no concern at all in that situation. I shoot over a farm just down the road from me and the owner is a good friend, however using a shotgun at night would be over stepping the boundaries of friendship and so on that farm I would either use a silenced rifle or nothing at all and not lamp. Never the less the original poster wasn't asking about such things, more to the point is the shotgun suitable for rabbits in a single barrel format, the answer is yes it certainly is both with a lamp and at dusk.
