Bryan 1,362
DS, why can't you use the air rifle? Bryan Quote Link to post
jason ov rez 0
So it looks like a CZ .223. Which is the most suited to me needs. What is the recoil like on them? price range? Very helpful lads . thanks alot Jason Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
Jason: Thanks for seeing that I wasn't trying to 'Hyjack your thread', mate. But am joining you in trying to tease out the answers which may benefit both of us and anyone else who may read all this Saying that; I wonder if the British Police would look too generously on a .223 as a first 'real' rifle? I'm sure as eggs the Garda wouldn't wear it. Not at all sure I'd blame them either. Bit like a learner driver passing the test and stepping straight into a high powered motor. They can't stop people doing that, of course. But, in my case, I've decided to try and show a bit of sense of responsibility by (hoping to be!) asking for a .22 Rimfire first off. Prove myself with that. And then maybe go back for a bit more clout once I've earned some. Perhaps some of our more experianced riflemen may have a view on that argument for us? Bryan; In Eire one's only allowed to shoot paper with air guns, mate. Can't shoot a pigeon out of a barn roof with a .22 air rifle - which I what I bought mine for. That and squirrels emerging from eaves. Regular pest control practices in UK. I now am also led to suspect that using a .22 air pistol to despatch a cage trapped rat or mink is equelly illegal here. In fact - I'm told annecdotally - despatching a caged animal with any firearm is illegal as it's considered 'Not On' under the scope of 'Fair and Wild Game'? (I'd be most grateful for an authoratitive statement here) No. Over here, it seems, the prefered and widely used method of despatching a cage trapped mink is to chuck the poor thing, cage 'n all, into a vat of water! Suffice to say; I'll find my own way around That little conundrom! Quote Link to post
Guest oldskool
macamom fergison 22.250 and a sako or anshutz 22 lr im not sure but i dont think they make the anshutz .22 anymore. i had one that broke the stock after i dropped it .... hell of a wee gun and the barrell is threaded to take a silencer. although you have to apply for a silencer and get it marked down on your permit .... the police will ask alot of doubtful questions about why you want it and i think you have to join a gun club to qualify for a silencer. but anyway i had alot of sport with it. Guest Frank
.222.50 , dont you mean .22-250? Frank. Quote Link to post
bshadle 5
I do a fair amount of varmint shooting over here, and tend to agree with Frank on the .223; the 22-250 has marginally better ballistics/trajectory for long range shooting, but is notoriously picky about the ammunition you feed it and the ammunition is considerably more expensive. Not real familiar with the CZs, the few I've seen seem good enough quality. I use a Savage 12BVSS in .223 mostly for groundhog, occasionally coyote. Using the American Eagle 50 gr HP I run better than 95% one-shot kill between 200 - 300 yds, anything <200 is a gimme; my longest shot so far has been a lazer-ranged 425 yds, but 400 yds is pushing it for the .223. The AE is some of the cheapest ammo you can buy here, but the .223 is so forgiving that it performs as well as stuff selling for 5X as much. As several said earlier, 22LR is good for head shots out to about 50 yds. 17HMR is deadly out to about 100 - 125, but falls off rapidly after that. At least that's my opinion. Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Thanks for that bshadle. A true rifle man, with real experience. Frank. Quote Link to post
bshadle 5
Frank, That's a good looking rig you have pictured, and appears to be some fine shooting. I'd bet you're no slouch yourself. Edited October 11, 2006 by bshadle Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Which picture bshadle, the CZ .223? as thats my rifle alright and i try to use it as much as possible, which is 2 or 3 times a week. Its a dead straight shooter and have taken a mass of vermin with it and i love shooting it. Shot 48 odd feral goats over a month, back in may/June. Here is just some below. Frank. Quote Link to post
