well i would go for a 10ft you would be able to use it on most rivers and still big enough for the lakes. I use a 9'6 on the river a 11ft on the lake hope this helps

if your just starting out id get 2 rods 7/8 for the lakes and maybee 5/6 for the river

maybee a wychwood you could get both for yoyr money and give yourself more options.
