I am thinking of getting into falconry I have found myself a course at a reasonable price. Could u please have a look at this link a tell me if you think it is a good course to begin falconry http://www.northumberland-falconry.com/section89963.html?

And also do u need a licence of any sort to own a female harris hawk and do u think this is a good starter bird.

If possible could any reply with an estimated guess on how much a female harris hawk and all of the equipment will cost? I already own a large avairy attached to a shed will this be a suitable home for the hawk.

Hi! Can't comment on the course but I do know one of the Falconers there! As for choice of bird? Steer clear of a female and go for a male. This is because they tend to be easier to handle and less tempremental than the females. males can and will take anything a female can, upto BUT excluding a hare! Hope this helps. PLEASE make sure that you have done a course OR gained sufficient experience with a good falconry mentor and have ALL your equipment in place BEFORE you get a bird!! Hope this helps? good luck!

Hi i have had Harris Hawks now for 14 years males are more agile but i would always go for a female because of their size.Males do seem a little quicker but both are game for anything i know people who have got male harris's flying at 1 lb 5oz and take hares no problem. The bird will only be as good as the amount of time you put into it in the first year.Beleive me the first year is the most important show it as much quarry as you can.The coarses are good but you seem new to this so i would advise you to do the same as i did and read a book called training birds of prey by jamima parry jones you will learn lots from it trust me you cant have enough knowledge if you need any more advise pm me and i will see if i can help good luck Harris's are superb birds pete

Females are not a handful they are exactly the same as a male they are forgiving birds and yes you will make mistakes but they wont hold it against you unlike a redtail
