Can anyone tell me are lens convertors worth buying & if so are japan optics any good ?

I personally don't use them kate, as you lose a full F stop when you use one, i.e if it's a f4 lense it would be a f5 with a converter. My friend has the 2x canon that she uses it with a 70-200mm f 2.8 and she gets good results (a canon one). I wouldn't buy any other than canon though.

Hi Kay, yes lens converters are worth buying as long as you buy qualiy, the downside with them is you get a slower exposure, IE you will be 2-3 "f" lower as they will let in less light, but in good light that shouden't be a problem or if you use a tripod, I think Japanese are about the best opticts these days as all the quality cameras come from there, IE Nikon Cannon etc.

what i wanted to try is getting a little bit extra on the length of my existing lens which goes up to 300 , basically for things like birds on the lake that are just out of focus & deer shots that are a little further away as i find there getting a bit aggitated so i would rather be away from them & hope i can still gett pics of them without intruding

i would love a new lens but i dont have the money for what i want or really know if this lens will be ok on the 1000d body i am using

so thought i would ask for opinions on the convertors , thanks both for the advice, much appreciated

Hey Kay, I know nowt about converters, but, most of the people I know who have Canon gear like yourself, go for the cheaper Sigma lenses as opposed to the more expensive Canon lenses, have you had a look at any of these..both new and second hand.

the lens i have looked at is a sigma 150 500 but it looks big i dont honestly know if this 1000d body will take it , if i had the £ 600 + to get one i would still need to look at what lens this body will handle

Hi Kay your camera body is plastic and IMO will struggle with a heavy lense as the bayonet fitting may indeed fail on the camera. The body of the eos 30d's and above are made from an alloy which are capable of withstanding the heavy lenses. My 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 weighs over a kilo, i always carry it with the lense and not the camera. I never use a tripod and only occasionally use a monopod as i find they hamper me too much...

Another thought too is sometimes when using a converter the auto focus may not work on certain lenses. before purchasing please make sure your lense is compatable and the auto focus will work correctly...

the general bumf on the net and many forums all say get the 1.4 x converter, but then odd guy turns up a corker pic on the 2x...

and you need to be aware that with a big lens you need a lens mount not the camera one... i think a light camera on a heavey lens isnt that bad as long as you carry the lens not the camera if you know what i mean, but as said above, plastic doesnt take that much (takes a fair bit like).. so a few times out and forgetting which end your carrying may take an effect..

i was looking at them too......

OK......having wasted money on Sigma X2 converter i would say to avoid them. Only buy a canon and i would plumb for the 1.4 as you will loose only one stop....

Also....i have used massive lenses extensively and i wouldnt worry about the 1000D kay, just remember to only carry the set-up by the lens. Never , ever, think about picking a big lens set up by the camera as this will not take the strain......

have a look at the 100-400 lenses....canon do them and i know they are very reasonable andi also know they take superb pics as i have handled one mysef last year.... :notworthy:
