Locating your dog by GPS or radio

Hi,

 

I used to take my dogs out for bigger walks on the fields and in the forest and we also go to wild boar hunts so I think to buy a locator for them. (Pretty much like the Deben/Ortovox/B&F, but it is for above ground and for more range.)Do you have any experience with it? Which one would you buy and why?

 

As for GPS I checked the Garmin Astro 220, for Radio there are countless options, mostly are smaller and for smaller range, which is also influenced by the geographical sites (but also cost maximum half of the price of the GPS).

 

I have Jack Russells and I was told the collar of Garmin Atro 220 would be anyway too big for them.

Hi Anna, I use the Garmin system for my pointer dogs and it's a great system. I don't know if you can adjust the collar size for terriers but it is expensive to buy and probably much of the information (dog speed, km travelled) is not necessary for you. The accuracy is great and you get good signal in the forest so it is possible to almost always know where the dogs are.

 

I first saw this system used in Norway for elk (moose) and it is obvious when the dog is working a hunting pattern or if the dog is chasing (travelling only in a straight line). It also tells you if the dog is stopped (baying quarry or pointing). The maximum readings I get are 600 - 700m but have seen readings of 2kms in Norway. If it is useful for you I can try the collars on my terriers...

Could you please check it on your terrier if it is not incredibly huge on it? I have terriers of about 12" and wonder if it will not be too heavy and big for them? Well, maximum their neck will get more muscular hihi. :-)

What is the price of it at your place? I am about to check it in more countries, because I guess we (Hungary, Central-Eastern Europe) are an expensive country for these kind of things.

Hi Anna, i'm sorry i forgot to check the collar size but i'll do it this week!the gps unit and two collars cost me approx £700 but it came from the USA so maybe you can get it at a lower price...
