feeding my pup raw meat!!

Recommended Posts

hi again guys,

my pup was getting tinned food from the guy that bred him, i want him off this crap for obvious reasons so i went to the local knackery and bought some raw stuff for him, i got home with it, put a wee pile in his bowl and he wolved it all, next feed he never touched a bit, he never ate for 2 days so i got a tin of dog food and he is eating that, clean bowl every feed! i want him off this stuff but he wont eat anything else!!

anyone got any ideas?

cheers

For an adult dog, I'd say starve it every time. They can go literally into the months without food if they have enough fat on them, and free access to water - so a week with no crap-in-a-bag to tempt them onto raw does no harm. With a pup though, I'd be more reluctant. By all means skip a day or so though, that'll do no harm. He's eating the canned stuff OK so it's not like he's lost his appetite or might be ill; he's just being fussy.

As lawrence said, try mean on the bone (chicken quarters, lamb breast etc) as they rarely refuse that! Also you could try raw green tripe chunks (great food), some nice smelly heart, or something like that if you get desperate. I'd try the chicken quarter / lamb breast or whatever first though. That way you can leave him a raw meaty bone in his crate or bed, and refuse to give him the canned crap. He'll soon get the message, and isn't having to "go without" except through choice... which never lasts long in a pup!

Just try not to get into the habit of giving him mushy foods (raw mince is still mushy) - WHOLE raw stuff is best, as it cleans their teeth while they eat.

Cheers. :victory:

How old is your pup? (or did I miss that) if its young then don't starve.. it needs regular well balanced meals. I buy decent raw.. lamb breast and minced beef from the butcher.Just need to be very careful with a pups digestive system. Chappie tinned food isn't too bad actually..(high percentage of fish and gentle on the stomach) so could mix some in. If all else fails.. cook your raw with veg, pasta or rice, then at least you know what its getting.

Good luck..

he is 8 1/2 weeks, he seems to be a bit fussy, some days he eats everything (tinned) other days he eats very little or nothing from at least one feed in that day.

i will stick with it and take the advice, cheers

It is unusual for a pup to turn his nose up at raw meat but I've also had a pup like that in the past. He'd drag rabbit and chicken out of his bowl and leave it on the floor then walk away from it, it was only after a few weeks that I found out that he'd refuse the good stuff because he knew my missus was gonna feed him tinned shit when I popped out and that the kids were giving him food off their plates as well :wallbash: . The pup weren't eating his food, but he certainly wasn't going hungry!!!

Don't give in to him, feed him raw, and make sure no one else is feeding him bits and bobs through the day off their plate. Come feeding time if he's hungry, he'll get stuck into it.

yes mate he was getting tinned stuff, but on a rotation with soaked 21 percent protein dry meal and raw venison, as i did say. a pup needs various things in its diet hence the variation in food, its found that too much raw food in the first 6 weeks of a pups life dont do its guts any favours as its too rich. the pups i kept back are on one meal a day of raw meats and fats and one meal of soaked complete meal. however there will be some who will disagree with that as there usually is.

the pups are 7 1/2 weeks old now mate.

Never Starve a Pup,How many Feeds a day is the Pup having?. My Young Bitch was A Fussy Eater when she was A pup.She was Having 6 Feeds a Day, Weetabix in The Morning then Meat throughout the Day,She would get her Last Feed about 8 o'clock in the Evening.I resorted to Hand Feeding throughout the Day(Meat) Because she Was so Picky with the Meat. Now as soon i put her Dish Down it is Gone in Seconds.Time Consuming But it Works, also i found the Pup Bonded with Me Better.
