jackarmstrong 4
what age to start her and what the best way all help will be apresheated thanks lurcher93 personally i would take the dog were the scent of rabbits is for a walk regular maybe let it rag a dead one so it knows what the smell is. i dont think the age it starts chasing the rabbits matters aslong as it capable of catching one. ferreter.al 22
i wouldnt let it do any running really until its knuckles have streightened out and it developed.8-9 nmonths,i also wouldnt let it got to places where theres lots of rabbits young and teaching it to scent because when you start lamping it could start hunting up all time and running about following scents instead of using its eyes.yis alex Quote Link to post

Guest fence_hopper
next september mate 100% dont be tempted to be a summer lamper, i waited with my whippet bitch till she was over 12 months old instead till sept. it will be worth the wait plus the rabbits are easier that time of the year and you dont ruin your sport buy catching as many pregnent doe's, so will have better nights lamping in the winter time alb al Edited December 6, 2009 by fence_hopper Quote Link to post

Cochyn 0
I think it depends on the dog as well. My bitch is 9 months and has taken to lamping far better than ferreting or mooching. She finds ferreting boring and starts to whine, play etc. But she is very focused when out lamping though and -while she still lacks a bit of top end speed- does well on the two or three slips I give her per session. You'll know when there ready. If you let them do as they like hunting up etc, you'll spend 6 months trying to get them to stop when your lamping!!!!. A dog that hunts up on the lamp is no good to anyone...My advice is let pups be pups do the basic training with them including breaking them to ferrets and livestock. I've never seen a dog ruined starting it late but i've seen loads ruined starting them far too early. Be patient and you will be rewarded tenfold Quote Link to post
