Not a great idea to keep as "pets"

Under the Animal Welfare Act, which came into force at the end of March 2007, anyone who is responsible for a pet has a legal responsibility to meet the five basic welfare needs of pets. These are: a proper diet (including fresh water), somewhere suitable to live, any need to be housed with or apart from other animals, allowing animals to express normal behaviour, and protection from and treatment of, illness and injury.

Movement

Under the law all pigs require a licence if they are to be moved from one set of premises to another (except if going to a slaughterhouse or slaughter market). This legislation even applies to pet pigs being moved from a domestic dwelling to an

animal home or veterinary surgery! They cannot be moved again to other premises for a period of at least 20 days.

Pet pigs have a degree of exemption from the Order with regard to exercising the animal. Owners wishing to walk their animals off their premises may do so by applying for an exemption certificate issued at the discretion of the local Animal Health Office Veterinary Officer. To obtain an exemption certificate (valid for 12 months) the owner must:

Draw out an exercise route approved by the local Animal Health Office Veterinary Officer. Each time the animal is taken for a walk off the premises, it must be along the route specified no other.

The pig must remain on a lead at all times.

The pig must not come into contact with any other pig.

No waste food must be fed to the pig at any time.

The pig must not be exercised on agricultural land.

The certificate issued by the local Animal Health Office must be carried whilst the pig is being exercised and produced on

demand to the police or Animal Health official.

Once a pig returns to the premises it (or any other pig from the premises) must not be taken off the premises for 20 days.

The owner must obey any additional condition imposed by the local Animal Health Office Veterinary Officer. Enquiries about

obtaining a licence should be made through the local Animal Health Veterinary Officer (see Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the telephone directory).

Pet / Agricultural Shows

If a pig is to be moved from the place where it is housed to a pet or agricultural show, a licence must be first obtained from the local authority Trading Standards Office. It is a condition of the licence that on return home from the show it must be kept separate from other pigs for a period of 20 days.

Transport

It is illegal to transport pet pigs in any vehicle that has not been properly constructed to carry them this includes a car. Pigs must be transported in compliance with the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006. Any vehicle used to transport pigs must be thoroughly washed and disinfected after use with a disinfectant approved as preventing diseases including Swine Vesicular Disease and Foot and Mouth Disease.
