ROB.BOB 21
why cant you pay for one? you see good pups for £100 sometimes, so if your beating at £30 a pop saving would take no time! rob Quote Link to post
Countrykid 1
why cant you pay for one? you see good pups for £100 sometimes, so if your beating at £30 a pop saving would take no time! rob Yes but if the oppurtunity arises I would take a free one, worth trying a free one before paying. Then I would have more to spend on other stuff (I want a shotgun Cert. etc;) And I rarely get paid for beating as it's like a private shoot. But I know of beats that would pay me. And I'd be lucky to get 30 quid a beat,if that's what you get lucky you Quote Link to post
druimmuir 1
When I have a litter for example I pick the stud dog and brood bitch very carefully , I might drive hundrds of miles for a stud dog, and then there's the care of the bitch in whelp, good quality feed, sometimes a vet bill associated to the whelping, good whelping box, pup milk, wormer, warm vet bed, heatlamps etc depending when the litter is due, keepping the pups well fed and looked after for 8 weeks, vet fees for docking and dew claws maybe if spaniels, and you hnestly think people would do all that then give you a pup for free ????????? Good quality pups whether pedigree or cross breed if well reared and looked after then no-one does this for nothing..........have some respect for those that work/breed good dogs and don't insult them by expecting something for nothing Nicola Quote Link to post

I have seen people say that they would give dogs for free to a good working home ON THIS WEBSITE. Not everyone will do all that. Consider other things. Quote Link to post

stando 177
Ok. In the summer I will hopefully get a new dog.I have seen people comment on here saying to a good working home they will give a dog free. I haven't had my own dog before really,so it will be my first dog (Gundog). My Mum has however. She has been working Gundogs (and Collies for the sheep) for about 25-30 years. She learnt the trade off my granddad, and I hope to in turn learn how to train and work a dog efficiently off my mother. I beat on a shoot,my friend has a shoot that his dad runs, and my relative also has one.So from the working aspect I have 3 almost definite places to pick-up on and I know of another 2+ shoots. We would provide a good working home, experience with training and working and anything you can expect. I would just like to know who theoretically would be prepared to give me a dog for free.Springer/lab/sprocker preferably but could take another. If you don't breed yourselves if you did would you? Thanks for your time, Callum. I think you would be far better off not rushing into getting a pup and wait until you have saved up some money and buy one from somebody you know or who has been recommended, look at the dog's working on the shoot's you mentioned and if you see a good worker ask the owner where he got it from? did he breed it hiself? Anyone who has a litter of pup's has put alot of time, effort, and if there spaniel's expence(docking, chipping etc) into rearing them so they are going to ask a fee!!! if you get a good dog it will be worth it!!!!!!!!!!!! SCOTTY1 3
ROB BOB IS RIGHT SAVE YOUR MONEY AND BUY A DOG, YOU COULD GET A CROSS FOR A LOT CHEAPER THAN A PURE EG A SPROCKER OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. Quote Link to post

Get out beating, save your money and you will value the dog more as you will have earned, bought and paid for it yourself. Also you will get the chance to meet with people who may be breeding from their dogs. They may, just may want to give you a helping hand if you make the right impression. I gave away a beautiful Cocker sired by a Championship Winning dog to a young lad last season. I got more pleasure in doing that than getting money for her. She went to a good home to a decent lad who worked hard, turned up beating no matter what the weather and did what he was asked when he was asked. She was the perfect age to start training and he has had her out this season in the line. But he didnt ask he just worked hard and deserved a helping hand. activeviii 8
I dont mean this to sound rude or anything but if you cant afford to buy a dog then you cant afford to look after it, IE: feed, vets, pills. Pay for a dog with good money then its for life as you dont chuck money down the drain. dont get one as a fashion statement please. Phil. Quote Link to post

My mum has worked them for 25-30 years and I intend to work it. And also I can afford it but if it's free then why not. I wish people could understand. And a horse costs more than a dog to look after and as I have a horse and dog already I think I would know about costs. Quote Link to post
