scent 509
well the first time my lurcher tracked a deer i didnt know what to expect when he was around live stock again .So the very next day i brought him up to my permission in around cattle and sheep and he didnt even bat an eye lid.I think they definitely know the difference between a deer and other stock. charliehunter100 22
is a tricky one but id say the same as scent they no the difference but some dogs just dont give a f**k and are as happy on a sheep or cow as a deer!! Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
a dog knows difference betweem sheep and deeraswell as you or me ..... Quote Link to post
mcass123 6
THIS IS NOTHING TO DO WITH DEER AND SHEEP, ITS TO DO WITH HARE AND SHEEP i had a lurcher a number of years ago, he was a nightmare with sheep, got him off a young guy that let him run riot on a farm, it took a while but i managed to break him until one morning he was onto a hare (pre ban) and when he missed the hare, he was on his way back to me and some sheep got up in front of him and he got hold of one!!!!!! he got a swift boot up the arse for this and i was on my way before we both got shot! i think the reason he done this was due to the fact the young guy i got him off of let him run about the sheep and do what he wanted to them, fcuk when i went to get the dog (6 months old) he had it chasing GEESE!!! a few nights later he chased and killed a hare, while he was retrieving it i could see he was un sure if he was gonna get praised or punished, he brought it right back to hand but i could tell he was un sure of the out come, anyway i think they DO know the difference between what they can and cant hunt Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,020
100% know the differnce Quote Link to post
James Doyle 59
i suppose it would be the same difference as a dog knowing the diferrence between a ferret and a rat except obviously the size Quote Link to post
Bootsha 1,306
Sorry guys, and I dont mean to piss on anyones chips here, and I can see that I am in the minority here, but once you have run your lurcher on Deer (succesfully), he can never be trusted on sheep again (not 100%), no matter how good he was before. This is just my opinion, but I beleive / know it to be the case. Like I said, sorry if I have burst anyons bubble here but I know it to be true, just my opinion borne of experience. Regards B PS And just to avoid any permission being lost, if they have goats there on your farm, either leave the dog at home or dont go there. Quote Link to post

scent 509
boosta your right mate if i had a dog on the deer all the time and was out with the dogs and a brown sheep jumped in front of it my heart would be in my mouth.scent just because he didn't do it that day doesn't mean he will never do it in my opinion any dog can worry sheep even if stock broken it only takes one slip ,even if he has never seen a deer ,i know that if hes on deer the whole time the risk is greater but i just think a dog knows the difference between a deer and a sheep Edited December 6, 2009 by scent Quote Link to post

Bootsha 1,306
I must say, these are ALL valid points. But the biggest tester for a dog in the sheep dept in my humble opinion, regardless of how good it is, and I include my own here for falling short of what is acceptible, is a hill sheep, smaller, more flighty, highly likely to burst out of some fern or cover all on its own, they run different and they smell different, and are much smaller than low gound breeds. I know some will come back with, "a sheep is a sheep", but trust me, it's not. Again this is just my own humble opinion for what its worth. Regards B Quote Link to post
scotty2306 37
would u say if ur dog is stock brocken it makes a diffence in taking big came such as deer just a thought thanks the first time a dog bothers a sheep i believe it should get a good hiding then if they have a brain they will never do it again no matter if the chase deer or not, with all my dog they have chased a sheep the once as pups and the hiding has done the trick they wont even look at them now and they have chased deer when they have popped out infront of me.if any dog chases and bothers stock when it been trained not to deserves to be pts imo Quote Link to post
