100% digging terriers

Recommended Posts

A DOG IS ONLY AS GOOD AS IT'S LAST DIG.

Id have to disagree with ya there pal..

WHY SO?

Well if uv got a dog that wont stay to ground n always comes away but on its last dig he stays till dug n does well.. Is he a good worker?

Or if uv got a dog thats a good proven worker wit 50+ excellent digs, take him out n doesnt do the business 1 day.. Does he become useless over night?

THEY CAN BECOME USELESS OVERNIGHT, IT'S CALLED SPEWING! YEAH AFTER 1 BAD DAY A DECENT TERRIERMAN WILL GIVE THE DOG A CHANCE OR 2 BUT WHEN THE DOG DON'T WANT IT ANYMORE THEN..............rehome. . IT'S ALL ABOUT STANDARDS AND WHAT YA WANT FROM YA DOG. 1 MANS 100% IS ANOTHER MANS 0%. THATS WHY THERE'S SO MANY QUALITY TERRIERS FOR SALE. :tongue2::tongue2:

Hepher..

EDITED TO ADD, I WOULD'NT KENNEL OR FEED A DOG THAT "WON'T STAY TO GROUND N ALWAYS COMES AWAY"

the terriers of today are light years ahead of where they were years ago . look back in the old books mate .Tipping 5.6,7,8 terriers into a set is NOT the way to test terriers........

I was just wondering how long did it take most of the experienced terrier men that are at it years to to finally get that terrier that you can call 100%.From the time you got your first terrier how long did it take or even how many terriers did it take that you could finally say to yourself ,i have a 100% digging dog or bitch in my kennell

i think once you have the right dog and bitch its time to imalgamate there strengths and breed

mine sadly dont get enough digs a yr, i know lads that have dug more in 2 weeks then i would find to ground in a yr or more, but i class a dog if it goes find and stays until dug too and doesnt walk out.

my eldest dog will but i have had younsters who went but wouldnt stay or just wouldnt go from day one.

its just part of keeping terriers

Depends on what you call 100% i suppose,I've had a few decent dogs over the years and a couple that i've been confident that when they went to ground that the quarry was in the bag,but even these failed to get a result at some point in their careers.IF A 100% earthdog is one that's NEVER failed then i've not had one yet and haven't seen one either.Theres too many variables in this game to use the term 100% freely.

well said makes sense.agree totally.

Took me 23years to get the terriers i have. Ive tried them all but none of them are working like the patterdales i have today. everyone says they are too big but you see they are the old breed as youve seen them yourself. different teriers for different jobs i can stand over all my terriers and say they are 100% until their next dig. they might work today and walk tomorrow its along time ago since i had a terrie that walked i pup this down to my line breeding

I dont think you always have to fork out big money for good dogs. I am only young but the bitch I work at the moment cost me a bottle of whiskey the two youngs pups both cost a bottle each all form different people. One man from Cork who writes in a famous mag, I think is a true gentleman. Two years ago he gave me a cracking 18 month old bitch. She was just a bit too small for him, in exchange for a bottle of whiskey. I dug twice to her bang on, then she killed was called in the kennels. My own fault, I was gutted. I rang him to tell him, he said no problem at all and three months later he rang again saying he had my ideal pup. Yet another bottle of whiskey and 12 months later and I have a lovely pup ready to go. I think if you are honest and genuine others will recognise this and decent folk will look after you. There are a few lads on here that I know and hunt with who often would offer me a pup or something that suits and in return I would always try look after these people. Its like hounds you dont buy or sell. If everyone swooped like the hunting world and few bottles of whiskey, perhaps the hunger for money and famous lines would be no longer. And all the big money would be left to the show world.

I HAD ONE SUPERB DIGGING TERRIER HAD 50 DIGS BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY BUT SINCE HERE I HAVE FOUND IT HARD TO GET A WORKING ONE WNET THREW DIRT AND STILL HAVENT GOT THE 100% IM LOOKING FOR AND IM AFRAID NEVER WILL

one example gary middleton dogs saw them 20 years ago fine big northern terrier built big and hard and could do any days digging any qurry now they wouldnt stand a day out in the cold this is my opinion if gary kept what he had he still win every show in england because they were true workers but not anymore plus they were free to test there dog then

ive got middleton dogs and they work and stay till dug

i have ruined a few terriers in the past, but i have learnt by my mistakes,

i did buy a 100% working terrier that got put thro some proper graft boxing.gif but stuck it to the end, ,

i later sold that dog for very litte money because of personaly isuses,

atm, i have a pattx spaniel she is 4 year old but i wouldnt change her for the world, no she isnt 100% to a terrier man, but she is 100% for the work i need, i can shout her out the deepest of earths, she will stay to charlie when needed but is also a great bolter, yes a few times she will show, bufore she gets stuck in, i dont just use her for digging so thats mainly were her work comes in, , most terrier lads wouldnt give her the space in the kennel but horses for courses n all that,

that is what i like in a terrier. thumbs.gif a stay till dug dog is to be admired. but to some they are a liability thumbs.gif in an ideal world. i would like to own a dog that could stay till dug. when told. kill the quarry when asked. and shout out when needed. anyone got one for me biggrin.gif

no one ever sells a good working terrier. is a very broad statement and of cource is not true. ive seen some very good terriers changing hands. and for many reasons.the terrierworld is full of sweeping statements and most of them are bollocks.

one of the main reasons good terriers change hands is they are owned by fannies that wouldnt know a good terrier if it jumped up and bit there arse. just remember there is no such thing as a perfect dog. no.gif and to match the perfect working dogs with good knowledgable owners. must be nigh on impossible.

take a long look at your present stock. as sometimes the hardest thing too get are the easiest to lose.

some dogs will have faults. are they genetic or are they your fault??? food for thought.

the reason there are so many so called shite terriers....

could it be that the knowledge of training and entering good stock isnt as good as it was..

a wee look through the hundreds of pages of the terrier section tells a story

early entering

bad entering

over working

over facing terriers.

testing to the max. (breaking) terriers.

the sportmanship atitude is rare. the whole game has changed. and not in a good way

super locators. a good advance . or are they. ive seen folk talking about certain terriers in a god like way only to find out they where mute. how long would they have lasted. and would they have been valued.

its not all down to shite terriers. and bad breeding in my opinion. allthough there is a lot of crap bred. thats just the tip of the iceburg. sad.gif

Very true, behind every good terrier theres a good terrier man,if you havent got it you will never learn it.

Very few dogs never have an off day,ive only ever seen 1 personally, not mine unfortunatly.
