.177 or .22?

Hey I was wondering if .177 was large enough to kill hares with or if I should upgrade to .22 for a cleaner kill. Ideally they will be headshots but will .177 have enough power for a body shot?

James seeing as you are from Canada mate, Ill try and answer your question as if i was in your country with your higher powered air rifles.

 

Yes both calibres would easily kill a hare, no problem what so ever. I believe your rifles fire at something like 1200 feet per second.

 

Body shots we dont do ever unless we can guarentee a heart shot mate.

 

A high powered air rifle that we call FAC or fire arms certificate rifle in .177 would shoot straight through a hares body mate and cause wounding and a slow death.

 

I wouldnt advise it friend.

 

Stick with the head shots if your allowed to shoot them in your country.

I agree with everything zini says!!

 

And If you are already using a .177 Then you should be used to its trajectory switching to .22 can be a little difficult!

Mind you, if its an FAC then the .22 would still have a pretty flat trajectory would it not?

thanks for all the suggestions. Air rifles that fire over 500 feet per second require a firearms acquisition license which i have. I think I'm leaning to .22 for the added punch. I already have a 22 rifle but because of the noise i would like a quieter option. Thanks for all the info and ill let you know when and if i get one. Most high powered air rifles here are spring powered and their are very few gas rifles that have speeds of over 500 fps.
