As far as I am aware there is NO specific law relating to calibres/power/loads when shooting fox.

There are general laws relating to cruelty which means you would need to use adequate power to deal with them humanely.

Anyone else got anything to add...

Anyone any advice or experience on the best tool for humane dispatch.

For dispaching foxes only from traps.

Cheers

Airborne

Needs qualifying more.....

If they are in open traps/snares then a 410/9mm garden gun or shotgun has a good chance, a 12ft lb air rifle is far from satisfactory, you will have a job keeping him still to get it anywhere close.

If they are in caged traps then rifles and shotguns are a health and safety issue and not for consideration, you need a pistol, 410/9mm again or .22lr is very capable, but they still run around in the cage a lot on the whole, so great care is needed.

Yes, a 12ft lb air rifle is capable of killing a fox but should not be anyones first choice!

Drowning in the cage is another option, but one I have NEVER liked, even for the rats!!

I think you will find that drowning ANY animal is highly cruel and very illegal.

Shoot it with a suitable weapon for the job. A .22lr pistol, 410/9mm pistol is perfect for the job. An air gun is NOT a suitable weapon for HUMANE dispatch, yes it may kill it but not as well as any of the afore mentioned weeapons designed for the job  patience is the key to a humane dispatch with a pistol, far too many people just stick one in it to slow it down if it won't sit still. In 7 years of using a .22 pistol for dispatch in a headshot i needed 6 2shots out of nearly 700 animals to kill cleanly.

If you need to dispatch in urban areas a shotgun could get you nicked big-time. Fuzz recommend sub-12 air rifle

I think we are singing from the same hymn sheet, but perhaps I didn't word it too well, I do not and NEVER have drowned anything! And whilst I can confirm 100% that a 12ft lb air rifle is capable of killing a fox (we all know it is capaple of killing people as well), it is not up for consideration in about 99.99% of circumstances! (never say never)!!!

That is bang on, and correct. You may shoot a fox with whatever calibre rifle or shotgun you wish as you will not be breaking the law BUT if you cause unnecessary suffering to the fox there exists a whole world of legislation purposely designed to make your life a living hell.

A while back there was a thread on this, started as I recollect by Big Noel. He traps urban foxes and applied for a variation for a .410 shot pistol. It was flatly refused and he was told to use sub-12 air-rifle. This is another area where the FEO calls the shots. (Sorry!). A lot of people posted in to say they had had the same experience.

Isn't possession of a 22lr pistol illegal? That's why British Olympic shooters have to go abroad to practise. There will need to be special legislation to allow 22lr pistol shooting in the 2012 Olympics.
