jusar whippets 10
Hi folks I have been shooting for many years with various guns, now i'm just about to put in for my FAC. My main quarry will be rabbit & fox, but i am confused as to what's what etc... I know i will only get a rimfire on the first ticket (is this the case)? I am so confused over what's what, ie .22, 17hmr etc... Can someone explain what is what, and what i would need as a starting point for long range rabbit & fox, and maybe the odd muntjac (if this is allowed) Sorry if this has been asked before, it's just a minefield out there Many thanks Quote Link to post
Nik_B 3,790
I think alot of people have said that the licencing department won't allow rimfire to be used on a fox so you'd need a heavier calibre for that and the deer. Quote Link to post

jusar whippets 10
Cheers for that, but what's what with regards to what i need? Quote Link to post
dc5 0
Hi mate, I use my .22 rimfire for rabbits up to -100 yards up to 150-200 yards I use the hmr. I can also use the hmr for fox. I you want to shoot deer you will have to use a centrefire rifle. I use the rimmy mostly for lamping as It Is way quieter than the hmr. jase. Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
imo it depends on what you need. ie'' what is the distance you come across the rabbits ? 22lr is good for 100 yards if you no the drop. but most people stick to around 75, yards. its very silent compared to hmr but hmr is good up to 150 if you no where to aim. most people stick to 120 to 130 yards. of course at night it becomes harder to guess the range so hmr is more forgiving as its flatter shooting. of course hmr ammo is dear to buy compared to 22lr ammo. if you want fox then put down for a centrefire as well. if it was me looking for one rifle then a 22 hornet will be good for both. abit strong for rabbits ! but if you relaod will cost no more then hmr ammo. and the bonus of being 3 times as powerful. so good for fox also Quote Link to post
jusar whippets 10
Cheers for that, i'm starting to make sense of it now Quote Link to post
MrYou 0
When putting for you fac, get as many cals down as you wish. you can have if you can prove a use. so, 22 rimmy general pest & cheep to run -50-80yds 17 for general bunny 100-150yds 22H centre fire good alround pest/vermin -150yds 223 fox 150yds+ & if a member of a club... 44 mag pistol 357 underlever military 303/8mm mauser & cannon for the door !! get them in, it will save on variations later @ £25 a time. Also if they say NO, it makes the FLO feel better, so 4 outa 5 aint bad Quote Link to post

It isn't even down to your FEO. Seems to me that you you should ask for .22lr for rabbits/pest species up to 100 yds and .22WMR for longer range rabbit and "occasional" fox. Now wait for the flit to hit the shan . . . Ric Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
For rabbits and fox the best bet is a .22WMR (just so happens I have one for sale)! Deer moves to a whole different dimension of legislation! Quote Link to post
