sit and stay

Recommended Posts

i recently started teaching my 1 and a half year old cocker stay , as i neglected this part of the training when it was a pup. It has been staying fine from up to a distance of 10 yards and i have only been doing it for a week and a half so far .

The problem is i walk away and it sits and stays ,and i stand looking towards it showing the palm of my hand but after about 20 seconds it lies down instead of siting upright , how do i stop this ?!?!?! :icon_eek: its realy annoying :wallbash: and i have been getting hold of it by the scruff and pulling it to sit position again but it doesnt seem to be curing the fault .

any help willl be much appreciated

cheers

Don't keep your hand up all of the time only use it to enforce the command when you have the dog staying put start throwing a dummy to your left or right side this should stimulate some interest and make him sit up if he breaks to go for the dummy as you have thrown it to your side you should be able to get to it before the dog does and then take him back to his seat and enforce the stay command with you hand rised and a growling voice.ps dont scruff him for staying put just to get a cocker to stay without belly crawling is good.

i have the same lying down problem when getting her to sit (cocker bitch 15mnths) but only on flat grass fields when shes out beating she sits upright cause she cant see me otherwise. ive just learned to live with it mine will stay as long as she can see me without moving. lifting them up by the scruff is counter productive as the dog just gets more submissive. dont know why she deos it just deos.

Why is it an issue that she lies down?

If you want her to stay and she is doing that I cant see a problem.

You are trying to cure an issue that does not exist.

If there is enough to keep her stimulated then she will stay up if not she may just want to chill.

There should be no need for the stay command as sit means sit until your told to do something else.
