Rainmaker 7
With the barf diet it includes a set % of fruit and veg, but the raw meaty bone diet does not, what about fruit and veg? Hopefully picture attached of said pup Another 'favourite' topic of Sandy and I! Suffice to say, dogs can't process or digest veggies and so on unless you break them down (liquidise, cook and mash or whatever). Dogs are carnivores, not omnivores. The whole "BARF" thing was started by Dr Ian Billinghurst when he broke away from the Raw Meaty Bones Lobby in the 1990s. The Lobby advocates (as you know) raw carcasses and meaty bones, with no need for fruit and veg. Billinghurst marketed some sloppy minced-up "BARF patties" consisting of a great deal of fruit and veg, and I suppose that was incompatible with the Lobby's (science backed) message that dogs are carnivores so off he went to set up his company. That said, so long as the diet consists of at least 70% raw meaty bones and offal, the other 30% can be whatever you like within reason. Fruit and veg if you want to, table scraps, eggs, whatever. There are no hard and fast rules, just ensure to feed as much variety as you can, raw, and in as large pieces as possible. At the end of the day some fruit and veg won't do any harm, but don't be fooled into getting carried away with it. They don't need "5 a day" as I saw one BARF company splash across their packaging recently, nor do they need a 'balance' of fruit and veg like we do. ANY fruit and veg they get is a bonus to a broad diet, not a requirement so don't worry about it too much. Nice pup btw! Cheers.
Guest clash
Purina pro-plan has always had my pups looking good. Like everything else, its worked for me,so ive stuck to it. Not much change out of £50 for a 15kg sack but it will last a litter of pups till the surplus go,or one pup for a good while.
mandog 37
If your going to buy pro plan you might as well save your money and buy a 15kg bag for a tenner. To muck emphasis is on the quality of the rice and not on the quantity of the meat. you will spend an extra £25 on a bag just so the meat content it does have is of better quality than that of a real cheap bag. But they all don't have enough meat in them full stop. Not enough meat in a dogs diet is not on really. When it comes down to it this country does not stock any real good pet foods like the Americans do.

If you're going to be spending £40 to £50 on commercial food, rather than raw, I'd recommend Orijen. I've mentioned it a fair bit lately, but only because it's basically the best of a bad bunch as it were. It's a dried kibble made of 75% meat, 25% fruit and veg, steamed at 90o for a few minutes (rather than rendered and cooked at 300o for three hours) to help preserve nutrient contents. It's all local (to the family's farm) fresh ingredients, and definitely better than science plan. Raw's still cheaper and better though.
