Good question pal, its horses for courses, i prefer a fair bit of collie in my dogs, i have a reverse threequarter fell collie bitch, a 9/16,s fell collie bitch, and a young pup thats just a tadd under half collie, if you like mooching ,ferreting and abit of lamping, you don,t require a speed machine so a half cross or something like that should suit you, if your into just lamping you could get away with a 3/4 greyhound, 1/4 collie, or a 3/8,s 5/8,s, best of luck whatever your choice. regards collie john.

It depends on your ground, ive worked the various crosses of collie x. but i have to say although im very happy with my half cross bitch i do think that bit of whippet blood gives them an edge on the collie greyhound crosses. I only hunt rabbit but they do foxes if one pops up. It also depends on what the collie is. Some are very heavy however ive seen collie johns work and they are very racey types of lurcher for the cross. I like the collie greyhound half cross back to a coursing whippet. For rabbits they are like heat seeking missiles alhogh a bit small for much else. Its difficult to say whats best for you as it depends on the ground you hunt, if you lamp sports feilds then your need a racey and fast dog. if the ground is rough then your need more collie blood.

As others have said, it depends on what you're hunting, the type of ground you work and your own character. I personally prefer working dogs with as much pastoral blood as possible ie at least 3/4. However, having said that, I'd have to say that a half cross is probably most people's opinion of the best amount of each breed, whether this be by mating a collie to a greyhound or by mating a collie lurcher to another collie lurcher is another question.

My advice would be to get to meet as many collie types in the flesh as possible and see what you prefer.

at the moment I have a young, 3/4 grey/ 1/4 collie, he is only coming up for 12 month old he could make a handy dog, I can not say any more at this time, but I have had some very good collie xs one of the best was bred from a first x collie she was the dam, and she lacked a gear for the long ears, but made up for it in other ways, and the sire was a 3/4 grey 1/4 collie, and he could do his job on the long ears, I was given a pup out of this mating, and to me that pup was first class, from the time I had him,I knew this fellow was a bit special, stamina, brains, and the gears to go with it, stood 26" length, and balance, and I emphasize, his Dam was only a good rabbit dog,so when you get the right, mixture of the Genes, and that was back in 1977, I sold him when he was 3 I was emmigrating to SOUTH,AFRICA,
