just got over an injury

Recommended Posts

my dog has got over an injury and to me i think she is over weight i saw her before bought her off my mate but i am asking what is the best way to get her back to the weight to run rabbits again

we run our dogs behind the jeep now an again they love it, but if shes already run rabbits before, just go out with her more often, and let her run on some the weight wil some drop off and come nicely back into shape, u wont believe how much it will tone the dog up just runnin it on rabbits :)

It all depends on how long the dog has been laid off work, and how fit it was before it got injured. If the dog has done nothing for say, a month, then you need to bring the dog back up to fitness steadily and slowly: just taking it straight out running rabbits is more likely to damage muscles and tendons than if you did some road walking first.

STeady trotting beside a bitke is one of the best ways to fitness, but take it steady to begin with: even doing 3 miles at a trotting pace will really tire a dog's muscles if it isn't fit: it is the continuous movement at the same pace which tires a dog out. Do 3 miles a day to begin with, then after a week or so go 5 miles, which you can split into two runs out if possible.

Once the dog can do 5-7 miles without getting tired at all or panting hard then you've got a half fit dog: this will also get the weight off providing you don't over feed the dog at the same time.

If the dog is over weight then take a third of its food out of the bowl before you feed it: simple really.!
