saluki x

Recommended Posts

Its hard not to repeat what good advice some members have mentioned on here.

The sal x grey for me is the ideal cross and i must add that deerhound added to the mix, well then you have the most dedicated, loyal, brave grafting dog to use for your pest control.

The problem comes when owners become too excited and enter the dog too early.

Bond, bond and bond not just saluki x's but any dog. Then the obidience comes into play, the steadyness, the stock breaking (espeacially saluki x's). Once all these have been drummed into your dog the rest will follow. Enter too early and all else will fail.

They are a great type if you are MATURE enough to have one.

Well said mate  people seem to have the idea that saluki are 'problem' dogs and to be avoided. They don't take to traditional training methods like a more 'western' type of dog.

But if you just adjust your approach a little and have plenty of patience and work on building a firm bond, it will pay off and they aren't just one trick ponies either, they don't need big open land to perform well if entered correctly. There is a line of thinking out there that suggests they are slower to mature and really come into their own in the third year, time will tell for me with mine, but early indications are good. He is steady as fook to train compared to the saluki x bitch I had before.

a complete want of a cross the worse the more % of saluki bred into them disobidient and as daft as a brush , unless its big field running i wouldnt bother . stick to other xs better in every other way.

clapper.gif You obviously havent seen one in action brought up by a good owner, half the people who own saluki or saluki xs are the ones at fault not the dogs, they just stick them in the pen for days on end, and take them out straight on the back of a hare reling on the salukis natural stamina and prey drive to compensate for the lack of effort in getting there dogs fit, someone who spends time and effort with there saluki or saluki x will have a total different dog altogether, you get out of a dog what you put into it, and that shows in the field, just with the saluki x you will have to put that extra time and effort and patience into the dog, but the end result will be worth it.

Saluki x lurcher is a better option imo as the saluki x greyhound is a cross of a head strong dog with a pretty brain dead dog so why would people ever expect the outcome to be a biddable animal beats me, crossing with a bitza lurcher youre making a hardier more versatile animal with added vigour and general trainability. It depends what you want the dog for at the end of the day.

Salukis and their crosses are hard work, they really need to bond with you before you can do anything with them, but once bonded I believe you couldn't get a better dog. They need a LOT of exercise otherwise they get bored, they take a lot of tiring out and longer to mature than some other breeds. Because of the unique bond between a saluki and its owner, any form of shock collar is a bad idea, they are not a breed that reacts well to any sort of pain and using one is risking the bond that the owner has hopefully spent a long time building up with the dog.
