Injured Whippet puppy

My 12 week old whippet pup has somehow managed to cut her leg

 

It did ot really bleed, there was a tiny amount after i 1st noticed it

She has so far shown NO signs of pain or discomfort (tough little thing!)

 

I am just worried because when i noticed it, it was not as wide open as it is now (it actally goes further around her leg than you can see in the photo) do you think she needs a trip to the vets in the morning or will it heal naturally, i just need a bit of advice and re-assurance

I have absolutly no idea, she went into my mums back garden for a wee, i stood at the door and watched her the whole time, she was leaping around like a nutter as she always does, came in and i noticed it about 10 mins later, like i say she showed no pain at all and it was only because we were watching her jumping around the living room like a crazy thing that i saw it, it looked like a old scar, it was a clean cut, straight across, no blood......very strange, but it has gradually opened up, still no blood though!

just put cut and heal on it twice morning and night works for my dogs salty water helps aswell

Oh come on, there is no need for the attitude, it is not causing her any pain so i am not going to pay £100 call out charge for the vet to look at it, i have never seen an injury like this before so was simply asking advice from people that probably HAVE seen injuries like this..............I worried it may open up further, if it does i will take her to the vet in the morning.

So many people on here know what products to use, i was only asking for some advise

Hi Hollie, It doesn't look to severe from that picture, as has been suggested above keep it clean with salt water twice daily and whack some kind of antibac product on it, you can get loads of different 1's from any good saddler. Cut and heal is good, as is NAF ointment. Keep an eye on it for swelling or redness, but i wouldn't say it needed a vet trip.

I wasn't giving "attitude"; and a dog of mine has had a very similar injury recently, and I knew what to do; you obviously don't ! Let me ask you one or two questions;

 

1; Have you cleaned the wound ?

 

2, Have you applied anything topicaly to the wound to prevent infection ?

 

3; Have you given the dog anything internaly to prevent infection, i.e. anti biotics ?

 

I'm not being hard on you... but if you are worried about the injury, and haven't done the above,,,,, Take the dog to the Vets !!

whippets are like that I'm afraid very soft skinned and open up like undoing a zip, if you work it it will happen many more times. Keep the wound clean and it will heal up no trouble no need for a vet, most likely to late for it to be stitched. And it would most likely open up again even if it was stitched up. It will not be hard to keep clean as she will keep it clean witch is most likely how it opened up more. I had the same thing with my bitch, she had a small cut when i went to bed and in the morning it was three times the size almost healed up now and that was two or three weeks ago.

Thanks for the advice guys, i knew whippets were thin skinned but bloody hell, like someone said, it is like she has been opened with a zip!!

 

At least it didn't/isn't bothering her, thin skinned but tough as nails!

Hi Hollie: is it a full skin thickness cut? It looks as though it might be: not to worry.

 

If this were my pup I wouldn't want to be filling it full of antibiotics unnecessarily: these sort of things can help to build up a dog's immune system.

 

The cut looks clean enough, all you need to do is keep and eye on it and let the dog lick it to keep it moist and clean.

 

The only time you need to worry is if the cut and the surrounding area start to look swollen, red and inflamed. You can smear some Savlon or similar on to it, but don't be tempted to try and dry it up: the cut needs to stay moist so it can heal naturally, starting with fresh tissue granulating in the middle: if it scabs up too soon it will pull and may get infected.

 

Only cover it with a bandage if the pup nags and licks at it too much: most lurchers etc are sensible with these sort of things. Obviously don't let the leg get dirty outside in the mud etc. The wound may look worse or no better for anything up to 4-5 days, but then you should start to see a difference as it begins to heal. If the pup won't lick it then you can wash it every day with warm salt water, just to clean any much or oozy stuff away: quite normal for it to ooze a bit, but if the ooze starts to go thick yellow and smell bad then you need to see the vet for antibiotics.

 

My dogs are doing these sort of injuries all the time (barbed wire!) and I've not had one go bad yet!
