No Kev i just kept the Lightning as standard mate.

Sniper I'll have to see what the gun shop say tomorrow friend. If the Verminator was just a defect rifle and i get a new one that isnt broken i think that i would now be ok with it as long as that one didnt leak.

Dont get me wrong mate the accuracy of this gun is beyong belief, its just that i need one that doesnt leak.

Sib,

If you are thinking at banging bunnies out to 45 metres then any calibre would be suited.

Here are the pro's and con's that i find of each calibre:

.177 =

Pro's -

A brilliant flat trajectory that is very forgiving if the range estimation is out at night.

You get a good deal of penetration with the pellet which really does drill brain boxes well.

Hold over isnt such a big deal as with a .22 calbre.

Pellets are generally cheaper.

Con's -

The kinetic energy isnt as much as a .22 calibre so a missed vital area will result in a slow death with the animal running off and dying in a hole etc.

.22 =

Pro's -

Lots of kinetic energy released into the vermin.

.22 calibre will be more forgiving if you miss the brain box and hit the neck etc. The animal will only run off a metre or so at the worst case before it keels over.

You can see the pellet much easier in your lamp as it goes on its trajectory so if you get a second chance of a shot the hold over / left right is much easier to guess.

Con's -

Pellets are more expensive.

Hold over needs to be spot on at range.

Wuzzy,

Yeah its a shame about Reggaemans car. Hopefully we will be able to meet up again soon mate.

I will get the Vermi sorted tomorrow mate thats a fact. Its under warranty as its new so it shouldnt be a problem. At the worst case they may have to send it back to Deben who then sends it back to Sweden so it will be out of action for a couple of weeks.

Ive still got the old faithful R10 though so can still do my shooting. The R10 will just have to revert back to my day / night gun for a few more weeks worst case.

If they will let me exchange it I think that ill ask them for the Weihrauch HW100KT that they have in there to try out.

Thanks again Zini for the advice. Bloody lucky for you I live over 300 miles away otherwise I'd be pestering you all the time to gain more of your obvious experience and knowledge.

Coming from shotgun and rimfire I'm learning to appreciate just what a good air rifle in the right hands can do.

The problem we have with rabbits around the stables and paddocks could not be handled other than with with a standard 12ft/lb weapon.

I already have a single shot .177 PCP so will probably go for a HW100KT in .22.

Cheers mate

I think that you have made a good choice there Sib

It's true what you say mate. A person who knows what they are doing with a sub 12FP air rifle can actually in some cases clear more vermin than someone with a rimfire.

Ive got to say that there is more skill in shooting a sub 12FP air rifle than there is a 90FP + rimfire.

Sib if you ever feel the need to drive that 300 miles you are always welcome to come and shoot with me and the lads, Reggaeman, Wuzzy, Festa and Marksman on my permissions. We are always looking to branch out and find new friends with the same hobbies as we have.

March time would be best i think mate. Thats when my permissions come alive :whistling:

By the way my name is Si.

Very kind offer there Si.

Actually I have a client in Leeds, so it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility to stay overnight a bit further north!

By the way, how did you get on withthe Verminator problem and the gun shop today?

Hi Sib,

I actually got on very well in the gun shop today mate. The people at Gilsan Sports in Richmond are top class and very helpful.

I took the FX Verminator in and explained to them what had happened to it. They put the rifle together and saw for themselves the air leaking out of the inlet valve quite quickly.

The shop owner is going to return the rifle to Deben today for them to look at it for themselves.

I have asked for either a brand new FX Verminator in .177 calibre “not the same rifleâ€. Or if Deben are not willing to do that then for them to credit the gun shop with £800 of my money so that I can buy a Weihrauch HW100KT in .177 calibre.

There is a .22 HW100KT in the shop already but after thinking again this morning about it I still want a .177 calibre rifle because it will become my lamping setup and the .22 calibre BSA R10 which is a fantastic gun in its own right will be my day time setup.

Either way mate I can’t loose out because I’ll either get a brand new Verminator which is a quality accurate rifle “when it doesn’t leak†or a HW100KT which by all accounts seems to be a legend too.

The gun shop has told me to give them a call again on Wed to find out what Deben are going to do.

They said that if Deben are going to credit their account they will order the HW100KT Wed and it will be in the shop for Thurs.

Yes Sib come up then and shoot with me and the lads. If you want to come up earlier than March then you are welcome to.

I have plenty of permission to shoot on, in fact really only one of my permissions has had my attention lately the others need me to get out and start shooting.

Flipping bunnies every where.
