border lad 1,047
Horses for courses, anothermans meat and all that, never had a bad lurcher, just some better than others. !!!!! well said, some are just that little bit better than, the others, but for me a good collie x is hard to beat, for filling the pot, ((( I do not eat CHARLIES, the one I have at this moment does what it says on the TIN, and he is only a youngster, Quote Link to post
GET THEM OUT (.)(.) 39
GOOD and NOT AS good in all crosses, the man behind the dog is more likely to be the missing link IMO. for once you speak sense Quote Link to post

wuyang 513
Not really had a bad lurcher. Best dog i had for hunting rabbits up was a little border collie bitch which spent the first year and half of her life stuck in a stable and was never let out. I was given this bitch free. I got her spayed as i never intended breeding off her and also keeping dogs on the premises. This bitch put my terriers to shame at hunting and bushing. I even lamped her, obviously lacked top end, but caught her fair share. And when she did catch it was very rewarding to see given the odds were stacked against her. Funny thing was the first time i took her out with my other dogs hunting came so naturally to her. I think some dogs just have that innate ability to hunt. To me though its not just about the numbers caught. Edited January 1, 2010 by wuyang Quote Link to post
Thomsons dogs 37
well at the end we will see what breed or x or pure will come up the most so does that mean poor owners dont think so just my opinion Quote Link to post
border lad 1,047
All these CollieXhounds, were they all 1st cross or were some 2nd crosses? Best one I had, was bred from collie/grey first x bitch, sire was 3/4 grey 1/4 collie, the pup I picked was a lively lad, and at 9 months he was hunting, as good as a champion springer, and retrieving to hand all daylight, that dog had it all speed, stamina, and the brain to go with it, he had a great gearbox, Quote Link to post

stormrider8 59
I had a bitza with a fair bit of collie in the mix. Up to about 2.5 ,3 years old was a cracking bitch on the lamp. And then out of no where it started picking its runs! i was gutted as i new the dog was capable of catching loads more than she was running for. Used to slip a whip/grey dog when she refused who would clean up! for me that was the worst dog but even she had some real good points! Quote Link to post
Thomsons dogs 37
was told years ago they can be bad if to much brains in the colliexs by a old guy had dogs for years said they can be bad for cocking/pulling up dont no if true because never tryed the breed so cant really make judge on them anyone else had that befor in the type or other types Quote Link to post
stroller 341
i know its off thread but my worst dog wasnt a lurcher but an english bullterrier. got it at eightweeks old and the first thing it did was bounce off the living room window trying to savage a passerby. At EIGHT WEEKS it was as numb as coal wouldnt come back luckily i was always a fast runner and could catch it before it killed a dog cat cow camel car person anything the b......d was frightened of nowt. kenelled with my 3/4 collie all its life until one day i walked into the kennel and it had nearly killed the lurcher this was at 5 months old!! sold it to a truck driver at six months old when my missus fell pregnant cos it was a liability with kids as well. The bloke loved it despite eating his cab half a dozen times and destroying his house his mothers house and his car. it lived until it was seven and choked to death with its head stuck in a fence. horrible pig eyed f.....r got what it deserved Quote Link to post
Catcher 1 639
in most cases why people get mmmmmm..lets call them not so good lurchers... is because they dont do there homework on the parent,s before they purchase a pup....some just dont make the grade i agree... but if you do your homework..and get the type of lurcher for the type of terrain and type of quarry your going to run your halfway there...just my humble opinion..... ..... snoopdog and his same old reply(the grade)So every dog you have had has made (THE GRADE) Did you have a word with the bitch to make sure How much dogs dident make your so called grade. And what did you do with them Good parent,s dont give 100 percent good offspring Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
For me it's simple, I don't/won't own anything I don't feel is up to scratch (my standards anyway!) and it's rare that i've bought dogs on that were already 'doing a bit'. Suppose there have only been two dogs that have fitted into this category, the first a Hancock 1/2 bred beardie/border, merle, a stunning lookin bitch. Unwanted, I took her on, sadly she was usless on the lamp, she was brought up as a day dog and I must say to that game she was mustard! She would find game where most failed, quarter a field for a hare as good as a Beagle and was a superb marking and ferreting dog but they wern't my game. She 'welded' herself to me, wanted to constantly walk in my shadow and boy did she look good there.... It was tough to pass her on and her commitment to me grew as I searched ever longer for the right home. I eventually found one, an old boy who retired to spend winters ferreting, he loved her, she grew to worship him and lived a long and happy life....! The second was also a 'rescue', a half bred American Bulldog/Greyhound, again a beautiful dog, probably the best looking half bred bull i've seen, I had high hopes but he just didn't have the balls he was born with, a shit-house arse grabber, who didn't like the ivory but what was worse was his intolerance to all small dogs . A fecking liability, he went... where all bad doggies should go!!! Quote Link to post
