Stuart O Connor 1
Kind of new to the hunting game only been doing it 4 years so had terriers and ferrets for the first couple of years but just under 2 years ago i was given a collie x grey and it being my first running dog i made a couple of mistakes with him but hes very loyal and not 2 yet so looking foward to seeing him in his prime Mainly got him for ferreting as i go every sunday but strangely he didnt take a liking to it but is excellent on the lamp After a long discusion with the lads and my dad about what a want a dog to do for me they talked me out of getting a fox lurcher as i needed a bit more experience so i chose a whippet for ferreting & filling the pot, shes only 5 months old now so should start showing signs next year in what way did it not take a liking to it mate,i would defo say the perfect x for a ferreting partner but thats only my oppinion cheers rob Same thats why my uncle got him for me but he tends to drift away from the ditch wanting the rabbit to bolt across the field so when the rabbits bolt and stay close to the ditch he doesnt give much chase ! But hes 110% lamping was you only bolting them for the dog to run or was you netting up aswell We dont usually use nets because we have 2 lurchers at each side I dont really believe in using nets when you have running dogs with you. Meerihunter 7
This will probably shock a lot of folk on here, but after years of injuries even fatalities I'll not have any dog carrying greyhound or whippet blood (even though I really admire the wee Whippets) they are simply an accident waiting to happen for my kind of varied hunting over varied terrain. I've a house full of retired lurchers of various breeding some of which are far too young be out of the hunting game and carrying lifelong injuries. That to me is no fun at all, maybe I'm just to soft but this is why I'll only have pure Salukis or mixes within these types of dogs ie mixes between Afghan Tazi, Taigan and Saluki. Quote Link to post
joshmarto 13
i own a beddyxwhippet i got this type because he is most suited to the ground i work him on ie small fields where i think bigger types would find it hard to get in there stride, small types seem to have better acceleration imo Quote Link to post

dogs-n-natives 1,182
I firstly need my lurchers to work with me, as my employees so to speak, in my line of work as a pest controller... and secondly for providing edible game. I will always have a strong lurcher, current one being bull/grey. But his coat lets him down, so will need to improve on this in the future. I also need a rabbiting dog, for hunting-up, ferreting, and lamping rabbits. And for me the collie lurchers, and some of the well bred lurcher x lurcher (bitza) are the best for this job. My current bitch is primarily collie lurcher. My next lurcher is to be the pot filler hopefully, and im picking her up this week(pup). deer/grey x saluki/grey collie/grey. Hopefully il be able to mould her to be a kind of jack of all trades type. As for lurchers and longdogs I dont like and wouldnt own... not sure where to start, as there are plenty... I admire and respect all working dogs. happy hunting DnN Quote Link to post

sambam 8
i love collie greys mainly because of their brains and usualy have good personalities but i like all running dogs. i would usualy stay clear of a salukix but iv ended up with one as i got him cheap off a mate and i know both perents are good workers so i took a chance. here he is saluki/bull/grey x collie/bull/grey about 8 month old and 25"tts at the moment Edited November 30, 2009 by sambam Quote Link to post

sambam 8
just because someone might not like to own a perticular breed or cross dont mean they dont respect it..well thats my opinion anyways.... like i said i would not own a saluki x because all i herd was ther thick as pig shat ect ect. but i got a dog with a good amount of saluki in him and i wouldnt say there thick just headstrong an stubborn, like someone said there more feral than domestacted but i always admierd there stamina an a pure feathered saluki is a nice looking dog in anyones opinion iv asked but would i own one.....not anytime soon simply because i know o would not have the experiance to train one to a good standard as to be honest im struggling with my pup with only abit of saluki in him but im not giving up cos iv got a feeling hel be a good one Quote Link to post
