watchman 256
i was just thinking about all the different xs we all have and the reasons why we run that particular type,i know there is a bit of stigma over the bullx, wich i have,(bullx not the stigma lol)but what made you choose your dog and why. just over ten years ago i got my first running dog,saluki/grey i worked hard with this bitch and had her doing what others i had been out with(observing)would not do, retrieving live to hand and obediant without fault, not that plenty of you lads dogs dont do this, but not what i had personally seen in the field. i lost this bitch at 17 months old(out lamping one night)and asked someone i know that was in the game to find me another dog, dont get another type like that he said, get a bullx.(thanks dave) well f**k me, i jumped in with both feet and got two litter sisters, the problems i had is so long winded id be on here all night, but at the end of the day, once i got my shit together,i have never looked back and rate them highly. i know certain type will handle different ground, running conditions better than others but that aside i can honestly say i would never have a lamping dog with bedlington in it no matter what the percentage. this is only a personal choice, some of the best dogs on here may well have this in their make up so this is not a slanging match for this type of breed only my personal view. i will add that, i am not and dont consider myself knowledgable in breeds and that i have only seen a limited amount of dogs working(lamping. from what iv seen,saluki/grey go deaf at the drop of a hat, hunt up and id be better off with the shot gun, everything iv seen with beddy has been obediant but gives tongue like theres no tomorrow, these are owner related problems im sure of it,entering to early, out matched ect,but i have read a lot of examples on here of this type opening up. so how many of you have considered the type of dog you really want,or just picked up a pup from a mate whos worked dogs and allways knows best when giving you an oppinion,or just seen the right dog for the right price. cheers all rob Quote Link to post
natter79 17
truthfully this was my first lurcher and indeed working dog, i've always had dog's but pet's (boxer's, german shepherd's and a couple of racing grey's) so on talking with friends and the land/game available to me i decided that some huge monster might be a bit too much, but i also needed something with a little bit of brain so the dog could at least forgive and compensate for any of my mistake's. and this is how i ended up with a good old fashioned collie cross. atb natter Quote Link to post

sounder79 80
i would say a first cross collie /greyhound for me.as an all round hunting dog is hard to beat.great brains and with a lot of stamina they wont be around your heals after one coarse.they can last the day open hunting so for me thats my choice of dog.
