.22 Application for a second rifle.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have my .22 rifle license and I have a cz 453 which I am very happy with and do not want to get rid of!

However I am doing a lot of bunny lamping and would very much like to get a semi auto for ease (probably a ruger 10/22 or remington 597) My FAC only allows me one .22 does anyone have experience of asking for more than one rifle of the same calibre? At the time of my application the firearms officer said that this was not normal as they were worried that people only wanted two guns of the same calibre so they could take a friend shooting. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

You can have two guns of the same calibre if you want to, but why would you? Unless you want a target specific rifle and a field gun I don't really see the point but each to their own I guess.

Just put in a variation for another rifle. It's not unheard of to have two rifles of the same calibre, in fact a lot of people do it. If they ask just tell them what you've just told us - that you want an auto for ease of use whilst lamping and the bolt action for whatever it is that you still want it for. Personally I don't like autos. They look good and seem like a good idea but you wait until you get a jam in the dark whilst lamping. It's not the end of the world but it will make you realise that the reliability of a bolt action is favourable!

If you want it and can justify it you can have it!

As an aside, asking for a second to take your friend shooting is NOT usually going to be a valid reason, but once you get it you are perfectly entitled in the right circumstances!

you've answered your own question - Mr FEO, I would like a semi auto .22 as I am doing a lot of lamping and I am finding that most of the shots are up close, and if I had a semi auto I could fire and kill at a rate unsustainable with the bolt action. Therefore this gets the job done better and keeps the landowner happy.

I want to keep my bolt action for daytime work, since, Mr FEO, it has this lovely set trigger, which is wonderful for daytime stalked shots but less brilliant for my lamping work.

If he argues, tell him to note down your case and take it to his boss. if they argue, tell BASC to instruct his boss to grant your ticket, as this reason is perfectly good and has worked for me in the past.

I reckon this would work too, on mine I originally put in for .22 AND .177 FAC Air, I said that because I would buy second hand I wanted the flexibility to be able to buy a bargain if it came up. The FEO was quite happy with this but his bosses weren't. In the end I had to choose because I couldn't justify having (thereby being able to own) both. This wasn't really a problem for me as I don't think I would have got a .177 anyway as I would want a multishot and the shot count would be too low in FAC .177 unless it weighed a ton.
