ArchieHood 3,692
I awoke Tuesday morning to the shocking discovery of my 8 year old spaniel Jabba dead in his bed, it later unfolded he had suffered a heart attack in his sleep. He was in my opinion a one off dog,so easy to train,a great family pet in the house and a good worker in the field. My dilemma is,do I find a replacement now knowing I will always be comparing him to Jabba,or wait a few months and see how I feel? Any advice would be appreciated. bedrock 16
If you’ve got the time and money get another. A home isn’t complete with out a dog.

I'm so sorry to read this - what a shock for you For some people, the right thing is to wait, for others it's to get another dog straight away. What do you want to do? Could you consider another breed, or perhaps getting a bitch, then perhaps you won't make so many comparisons. I've had generations of the same breed, coming down from 2 sides of the family. I tend to keep a male from a very special female and vice versa, to reduce the likelihood of comparisons.

Another breed is a good option,I get the best part of December off work so i think i will start putting some feelers out.Maybe if i only get the dog i feel happy with my decision will be made for me Thanks for the input guys
The one 8,479
Its the start of the shooting season mate and shooting without a dog ? get one as soon as possible
Malt 379
I'm sorry to hear that mate, RIP Jabba. Personally, I'd say jump in and get another pup. That's not to say I'd go out and buy the first one that I came across though, I'd take my time and ensure that I'd be getting the right dog for me. You could say that my search for a pup would begin immediately, but I'd take my time with the search. Good luck with whatever you decide.

irishnut 297
my springer died in june this year at 3 1/2 of cancer, i thought of leaving of getting a new dog, but in the end i just had to get back at it, i looked around at labs but, as soon as i seen a litter of spaniels from a decent working line, i knew what i was missing, i now have a mad 4 month old pup, totally different to my last dog, obviously, as he isn't the last dog, hope you do whatever is right for yourself and good luck
higgins 75
Some good replys here, but the decision still remains with you and what you think is best for your circumstances.I can only say when i have lost a dog it has been better for me to think forward and get myself another as i know i will soon be busy with the next dog, never leaving too much time to think of dogs lost, just a glimpse maybe then a fond rembering period and comparing the new puppy but not in the same way just noticing how unique every dog is and how their characters are different,in my case i just think of life without some sort of dog would be empty,i would always rather have the companionship of a dog rather than a person, atb, Higgins. oakey 57
I wouldn't get another breed as i would keep thinking that i should have got a spaniel but it's up to you to decide what you want and stick to it and be prepared to wait for the right one .I lost my lurcher a few weeks ago and i'm waiting till i can find the right pup as i once bought a puppy choc lab out the back of a land rover he's a bloody pest nutty as a fruit cake no good for nothing but eating and swimming
sambam 8
when i lost my old black lurcher danny he was 17 and he was like my best mate or a brother if you like as i grew up with him, i knew i wanted another lurcher but everybody told me to wait, your only young,, get out and enjoy yourself, go on holiday ect thats when i found this site as i was looking for lurcher info, i seen different breeds and colours ect and decided i wanted a collie/bull/grey AND DID NOT want another black dog as it would remind me of danny too much. anyway i got a call from a mate saying i could have a pup for 40 quid so went to have a look and come away with a black pup with the same markings as my old dog.when im walking him people even say to me fxcking hell av you still got danny best thing i ever done was jump back into getting another dog but its entierly up to you
peefa 0
I lost my black lurcher last week, I dived in and got another was hoping to find another black and i did a mate of mine sold me one he was bringing on and i am glad i did. Me and wife were devastated losing the other had to push her a bit to let me get this one but now shes here we are definatly happier rather than being miserable. Good luck in whatever decision you make.
