mcass123 6
dont confuse the smallest in a litter with a runt, there two difrent things he is the smallest but not by a great deal, the breeder did say that he was the "runt" but he also said he was a game wee pup Quote Link to post
mcass123 6
i took him home last night and he has been great, hardly a chirp out of him overnight and he is runnin about the now with my niece, he hasnt really eaten much since i got him (last night) but i am putting that down to him being unsettled, could this be right? Stabs 3
Exactly right there Tomo.....a runt is a cull Quote Link to post
mcass123 6
so perhaps this pup isn't a "runt" then? maybe cause he was the smallest he has the label of the "runt", he looks fit and healthy enough to me Quote Link to post
whin 463
yeaqrs ago 2o plus we had deerhoundy type of dogs we picked the smallest bitch as the dogs were real big for the hares , but not runty just smaller , usaly ended up with a 25 26 inch animal were the dogs were 28 plus and not as nimble , i never go for size lenth of back strong head good feet and look at what the parents are and if lucky grand parents etc Quote Link to post
doxhope 2
Theres a big difference between a runt (small because of some kind of problem) and the smallest pup of the litter....Ive picked the smallest pup before out of a few litters, most turned out cracking dogs, and the best all round lurcher Ive seen on was picked this way, in fact at birth she was thrown to one side as "one for the sweeps" Quote Link to post
mwncidur 0
As others have said, I think a 'runt' is a sickly about to die pup. Other people just call the smallest, although perfectly healthy pup the runt. Good luck with your pup. Any pics of it? Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,153
Size of pups and even adult sizes should be picked for the job you intend them to do yc. I have picked 5 pups that have been the smallest in the litter 4 of those being terriers for good reason. And the most recent a Bull/Greyhound that was a left over and I must say she is a great all rounder, totally fearless. Quote Link to post
