What does the greyhound add to the mix

Recommended Posts

I was having a debate with a friend and just thought I'd put this up for everyone to have their own say.

I believe the greyhound adds far more than just speed to the lurcher. I think a good greyhound bitch is essential in producing a good litter.

My mate reckons all you need is an old track bitch.

Before some people go off on a massive tangent, I do recognise that lots of goodlitters have came from untried track bitches but this is to the testament of the greyhound as a breed. I just think a greyhond from coursing stock is far more preferable than from track stock and as their available I dont understand why people wouldn't use one.

it all depends on the greyhound is a coursing dog is it 840metre 560metre track or is a bitch that has no good because its a fighting f**ker on the track and no good for racing. in my case lucher to lucher for me two dogs that are working not ( hancock ) something breed thats has never hunted in its life

I like the track greyhounds myself, but I have had a recently been working with an Irish coursing bitch. She is mentally much sounder, but that is mostly due to her upbringing methinks, as the track bitch was institutionalised.

I like the track because of the lighter build, and smaller size. She has a good nose as well.

the Irish coursing bitch is built like a weight lifter and has legs like pillars. A neck like a tree trunk and long thick back. She is calm and gentle but surprisingly runs cunning, probably the reason she was retired from coursing. The track bitch does not run cunning (but I am working on that).

The two are like completely different breeds.

I am told that most lads here like the coursing greyhound for breeding. It definately would make a sturdier built lurcher.

if its from a track then its only speed cos there as thick as pig shit in my own experience

the greyhounds you get of the track, are only trained,to trap,, and to run as fast as possible, and when they are a couple of seconds slow,

they are,put to sleep, or pet homes,(( if they are lucky, ((( I was given a coursing greyhound bitch, she was only 20 months, old.. when she was coursing, she learnt, if she stayed a length of the other dog or maybe 2 she could catch the Hare, and also she would jump the fence, at the end of the course, which was taboo, I received this bitch, from a well known, trainer,as they were going to put her sleep, that bitch was a fantastic greyhound, sadly, she could not breed, on two occasion's,I tried to take pups from her, (( but she give great sport,

I personally think that the pups get 50-50 genes from mother and father, but get alot of their mental soundness and personally from their mother as thats all they know. However a friend of mine who breeds lots of dogs (spaniels, labs, lurchers and terriers) thinks its uncanny the traits they pick up from their father that they've never met.

I personally think a good mother is more important than a good father. (but both are still very important)
