Mossdog 27
My Irish Terrier was very bright and trainable, plus he has a really good nose, was very fast and had a lovely temperament with people. With bitches he was fine, but young, very bouncy, pushy males were never tolerated -apart from a chosen few. Despite the rest of this post - I thought he was the best dog ever and I still think a really top Irish Terrier is a brilliant animal. Be really careful with Irish nowadays. I'd love an Irish x Greyhound but being very involved with the Irish Terrier world, I know that sadly, although numbers are increasing, quality is nosediving Most Irish are now bred by pet owners who just wanted a friendly, slightly mad, hairy, ginger dog to pose with. There are a few people in the breed who will rent a stud dog out to anybody, regardless of the quality of the bitch. I can count the breeders who actually consider nose, stamina, agility, intelligence and a really good, harsh coat on the fingers of one hand. Beware of footpad hyperkeratosis (its where the dog gets corns that grow so bad eventually the dog can't walk and you have to bathe / trim the feet regularly to give it any quality of life) It is coming back into Irish because of people not knowing their bloodlines and popping out litters because there are people who are dim enough to pay silly money. I don't believe there are any Irish Terriers that are actually bred with ability to work as the priority. There are a lot of breeders who will proclaim loudly that their dogs are capable of anything - but if you probe a little deeper, they will never have trained a dog to anything in their lives, except stand still on a grooming table, or maybe they have dabbled in obedience or Good Citizen. I'm not knocking all breeders. I do know 2 or 3 good ones (yipeee! the future is so rosy for my favourite breed!)but if I was going to buy an IT x Greyhound I would want to meet the sire and watch it work in some way that shows me its nose, drive, disposition and athleticism (and I'd have a pretty close look at the greyhound bitch too) Another thing about Irish is that they do not tolerate harsh or inconsistent handling. They respond to a mix of absolute consitency and lots of fun and praise thrown in. They are born with a Phd in Emotional Blackmail and are great at training their owners if they are allowed. The best thing about a good Irish Terrier is that your garden will be free from cat poo (in fact, the whole street will be, but get used to smiling sweetly and saying how sorry you are when the neighbour's cat goes unexpectedly missing) Okay - that's me probably expelled from the club - but at least I've told the truth! If you do go for a pup - please, please post some photos for me Quote Link to post
Stabs 3
Theirs a lad called gary farmer who is well known in the non ped whippet racing scene who bred this cross about 4 year ago i saw the pups at a race meet were he had them for sale and they looked cracking pups with plenty of leg and a brocken red couloured coat i often wonderd how they turned out as i was tempted to have one myself.IMHO i think this cross has got a lot to offer going on one a lad had up this way about 15 years ago though that was an ireish terrier x whippet/grey atb dell Poacher...I was backwards and forwards down Gary's house about 5/6 years back trying to get a lining from Come on Ernie and Gary was trying to mate his red leggy fell terrier with one of his whippets. Are you sure these he had for sale were not out of the fell? He certainly never had any Irish dogs back then. Quote Link to post

YOKEL 2,229
there was an irish terrier x hound up here a good few years back called "roach",looked like a battersea mutt but was a cracking dog and as fast as feck, remember being at the old gamekeeper and countryman fair at ware and he'd been entered into the straight racing, stood in a line of right racy looking saluki x's and near pure hounds and at the end was this scruffy red mutt, well when they slipped he was halfway down before the others got started, there was a few dropped jaws, made us chuckle... yokel.
