Lurchers and farmers

Recommended Posts

Had the lurcher out earlier walking along a local right of way. She was off the lead, but walking alongside as there wasn't much about in the field. The farmer came straight over to me and said he would f**cking shoot the dog. I love people telling me this, but managed to hold my temper and asked why. I was told that it was a lurcher and I had no right to let it off the lead. He had some bullocks in the next field and that was it. I was doing no harm. Get the feeling that if it were a lab or something else, he wouldn't have had a problem.

It gets better, I asked him about the rights of way through the field. My 2005 OS map indicates three. He was having none of this and said it was just the one (that everyone uses, the others are neglected). I happened to have the map with me and he said he didn't have his glasses and just repeated that if he saw me off the path he'd said was a right of way with the dog on or off the lead he'd shoot her.

I wouldn't mind so much but I am new(ish) in the area, have only a few small bits of (local) permission and don't want to get a reputation. I still want to walk the rights of way as they are very convenient from my house. I just couldn't talk to the guy.

Rant over.

There not all like that but he sounds like a full on idiot the sort to get someone in trouble, whats probably happend is he's prob had shit with other lads in the past and you suffer for it,best to keep out of his way if you can unless you think you can get on the right side of him,but i'v met a few like you describe and i wouldnt count on it,like i say tho there not all like that so just seek out the guddens.

go back tonight on his land for a few slips ,you should of just told him to go f**k himself.post him a copy of the map though his door atb with new permission.

I very nearly did. I rather he threatened me than the bloody dog. I guarantee he knows there's more than one ROW through there, just doesn't want others to know. Thanks

Think you've hit the nail on the head there. There are a few lads that come over foxing that have caused a bit of bother. This guy is a bit mental though and I could barely understand what he was saying. Cheers ATB

Think I will do as I value the dog too much to mess about.

Now, I'm a guy who often "walks on the other side of the fence", so to speak ! And have had a dog shot dead by an over zealous keeper; but we ALLWAYS only hear one side of these stories !! If you were threatened by someone with a firearm when you were on public land, going about your business, simply dial 999 and I can assure you, the guy will NEVER threaten anyone again !! He'll loose his F.A.C, S.G.C., and probably his livelyhood..... IF you were in the right !

Cheers.

Its proving it tho chartpolski, no doubt if it came to that the farmer would tell the law cochyn's dog was worrying his bullocks, leaving cochyn to prove otherwise, just be a waste of time and for both i reckon, theres acres and acres upon acres to go at, i reckon he should head for them instead.

im a farmer and dont mind lurchers at all when there owners have permission and there dogs are stock proof. But we've had lads lamping and the next morning we find sheep with broken or badly wounded back legs , these are the lads that spoil it for the rest of you. But we still let lads on who we can trust.Farmers usualy stereotype people with lurchers because of these stories of people poaching and wounding or killing livestock.
