was thinking about putting a greenhouse type tube heater in the kennels for winter. do they have built in thermostats or not?

YES you have to get a thermostat i would not use one of these tube heaters geta heat lamp on a timer

i think that they have built in thermostats, are you are worried about them overheating?i know they come in different outputs measured in KW's i am considering to fit one as well in my block kennels wired up to an external switch, but i wouldnt keep it on for long periods just maybe 2 hours in morning and 2 hours late evening only in extreme cold conditions, dont want to overheat the dogs or have a hefty electric bill and the advantage of an external switch is that you can switch it on/off without opening kennel door and losing the heat,im going to do a google shopping search and find out some more info.

i've got a couple of these heaters but i don't think they have thermostats built in,

only way to switch on -off at set periods would be to plug it into a manual or digital timer socket,if set for short 'on' periods before it gets too hot it would mimic

a thermostat.

they dont normally come with stats, but you can wire one in remotely, but to be honest they give out very little heat the stat would rarely kick in. as previously said they are to take the edge of the room temp.

if you look at the link the small one is 60 watts , equivalent to a light bulb.

i have used these years ago when i use ta race pigeons and we had them set up in lofts to maintain the temparature, you have to wire up like a room thermostat for them to work well but not sure if they would be any good in a kennel as like was said before the thermostat would not realy kick in that much so would be permanantly on, worked well in pigeon loft but that was closed in and had insulation fitted so think it would be a waste of money in a dog kennel . atb midge

I put mine inside their box and plug it into a thermostat

Heat lamps are ok but your heating a larger area.

True they don't kick out as much heat as a lamp but placed in their box with a covered front a tube heater puts out more than enough heat.

They are also very cheap to run.
