Big Cats

Recommended Posts

You often hear stories of mysterious large black cats sightings across the uk. What is the legal position fo shooting one if you saw it on your land?

You can shoot it i think, just make sure its a good shot or it might come back to bite you! As far as i know cats are not protected in the UK

I'd guess that in an emergency such as if a big cat was attacking fluffy livestock or threatening a picnicking party of nuns you could shoot it with whatever gun you had to hand that would do the job and claim that you behaved in a reasonable manner in the circumstances. On the other hand I reckon that if you are using a rifle your certificate will be pretty specific about the conditions of use and it's dog-poo to doughnuts that very few FAC certificates specifically sanction the shooting of alien carnivores !

That leaves you with a shot-gun in your hand ,at close range and hopefully with a couple of SG cartridges already chambered . At this point you might decide that it would be a shame to end the mystery of Britain's Big Pussies by actually killing one and bravely shuffle off backwards to the a safer distance.

Some say they may not actually respond to being shot anyway . Them as believe in aliens and ghostly suchnobs that is .

get a good photo first, then shoot it,if your quick enough, too many sightings, not enough dead specimens or photo evidence and before you can say big cat there's another thread on 'sightings'.

In the essence of the firearms act you would be in breach of the terms and conditions of your license but as the government and police refute big cat existence how can they prosecute you for a myth?

If it is attacking livestock you can shoot it with a "suitable calibre". .243 and up, or as said shotgun with SGs close up. But that close I do not want to be! There was a thread on here a while back started by a guy who was losing sheep and thought it might be a big cat. He set up a hide and the culprit succumbed to a .243. It was a lurcher gone feral. If you don't catch it in the act then, as said, shoot it with a good camera then fire a shot to scare it off.

Not so sure about this chap. Many years ago I thought I had seen a Big Cat. When I woke up I realised I had fallen asleep after 69 with the lass. I was looking at a big black pussy . . .

Shoot

Shovel

Shut up

So I am led to believe.

Why, surely the proof everyone wants is worth seeing? Nobody would question defending oneself in such circumstances? Thats assuming you could justify walking round with a gun suitable for killing it!;)

how on earth would you be defending yourself at 50-150 meters?? lol

if you can be certain that it IS a big cat then the best option would be to take a photo and leave it to get on with whatever its doing.( dad always said not to mess with big black pussies).

big cats take some dropping and anything under a 30-06 heavy load may just piss him off enough to come and get a piece of you( very fast attack!!!).

take some pics of any prints you can find and kills etc...

the farmers around shrewsbury seem vary confident that there are big cats around.

good luck( would look good in front of the fire though wouldn't it :clapper: )
