I have used springer spaniels to work with my lurchers for the last 25 years and have found them easier to control than terriers that i used to bush with and have never lost one yet.An awkward predicament years ago [bANNED TEXT] bushing with my mates terriers in a private wood were a badger unbeknown resided convinced me never to use terriers again though they do take some beating in realy tight cover.atb dell

I use spaniels too Dell, and they are true workaholics, will flush game all day long for sure from any land or cover....added bonus of a great retrieve too.

But for me, the cross-breds are the ultimate for working alongside the lurchers, and doing drives to guns and lurchers, as they will track a line further, and also give tounge, which the lurchers home in on. Or even when just ratching with the pack, when a hound speaks, it gets all the dogs attention straight away that there is game here!

Thats true about hunting a line as my springers are used in close proximity and will not hunt on.I have thought about crossing one with a russel as i have heard good reports about them but a few lads down south who have the cross say they will go to ground if they get the chance.atb dell

I had terrier/spaniels that would hunt like beagles in the covers, great voices, and never went to ground. But i trained them hard to put them off holes, and they were never present when terriers were entered. Mine were a smaller type as well, being cocker spaniel crosses not springer.

I have recently got a cocker puppy for bushing, only 16 weeks and he just naturally wants to get in the bushes and have a good bash around, noes down head first. I thought about a terrier and would still like one when the wife agrees but Im well impressed with this little fella. Cant wait to see him start pushing stuff out to the lurcher :boogie:

Me and herdwick regularly run a mixed pack, his terriers, 4 jrt bitches, my 2 lurchers and my mongrel terrier. The russells are very good in cover and they are all working well together. The red terrier is my bushing dog, he was a rescue and has been very hard work but recently he has just started to come good! Hes 16" tts and chunky so too big to go to ground in most places. im pretty sure there have to be easier dogs to train though!
