Aaron_butcher 17
Hi all, After flicking through various posts on here I came to the conclusion that I should knock the dry food on the head and give the ferts an all meat diet. They have been on it for about a week now and love it but I wanted to clear a few things up. They are mainly getting mince meat is that enough on it's own or do I need variation? I'm using the tesco value stuff, is this too fatty and full of rubbish? They get one large bowl between the two of them every evening, is that enough? And I want them on whole rabbits really but I haven't worked them yet due to lack of funds for ferret finder etc, but can I feed them on rabbits that I have shot or is it too iffy that they might swallow the odd bit of led shot. Sorry for the barrage of questions Thanks I'm advance, Aaron. Quote Link to post
fergie 0
I would buy them the cheap chickhen instead and i feed mine loads of stuff i have shot no problems Quote Link to post
James Doyle 59
I GIVE THEM THE ODD RABBIT AND DRIED FOOD TOO Quote Link to post
stubby 175
yeah, change over to chicken drumsticks or wings, still cheap,as mince has a high water content to it, plus no bone, as for anything shot, dont worry, Ive often feed shot rabbit with no worries, even find the odd pellet/shot left in the food dish Quote Link to post
Guest shadowz
I would feed them a much more varied meat diet. mince is not gonna give them everything they need at all. feed them on mince , chicken wings/drum sticks , chicken livers , rabbits , chicks and so on. Most of those ( except rabbits/chicks ) u can buy in the value range cheaply. You should be able to feed the shop rabbits as well Quote Link to post
max abell 196
Shot rabbits and pigeons are fine mate mine have been fed on shot game and vermin for years and never had a problem with any ferret the only things i never feed my ferrets is pork cos it tends to give them the sh**ts and rats for obvious reasons Also if the ferrets freezer is looking a bit low we give them a good quality dry food like james wellbeloved until we go ferreting or shooting then they go back on the whole rabbit or bird again Quote Link to post
bud 5
I give mine ox hearts, are these ok? I can get 2 for £5 or under from my local butcher and 1 heart feeds the ferrets for at least a week, They seem to love them, chuck in a bit of dried food every now and then too. Will hopefully feed them rabbits though as soon as i get them out working. Quote Link to post
ellir0305 9
most healthy offal is great for all meat eaters, get on and work them with a friend so you can see all the holes and save up for a locator or go with a mate who has one. dry food isnt the devil mate i think a mix of both is a good healthy diet atb rob Quote Link to post
The one 8,505
Theres no roughage in mince i feed whole rabbits and whatever else i shoot or trap and you can see the fur or feathers in there stools Quote Link to post
Edgar 1
Mince is ok if not fed to often as is chicken. But cheap chickens are fed hormones that make them huge and infertile which is why I only feed my ferrets home grown chicken from my hen house and not shop bought. Free range would be ok but too expensive. Don't worry about lead shot. Ferrets pick it out and even if they do swallow a bit it will pass through them and come out at the other end. The one 8,505
You can get a box of 10 kilo of chicken carcasses for just over £3 i reckon they would be better than mince as they contain bones etc Quote Link to post
Marksman 934
TRy calling to your local pet shop and getting the frozen dog mince..... it's all the offal etc minced up and even includes bone. If I'm running low on rabbit then thats what they get. I've never fed a ferret on dry food and never will.....just a personal preference, not aimed at those that feed dry food! Aaron_butcher 17
Went to the pet shop today and bought a bag of frozen lamb hearts and a bag of chicken wings, the hearts went down a treat but they aren't really touching the chicken. As for going ferreting with a mate to use a locator, i've never met anyone down here into ferreting just loads of old boys telling me about back in the day. Quote Link to post
