danebrewer10 6
Hi all, If there is a rifle say that you really like but isn't offered in the caliber you want... is it possible to order it in a small cal. and bore the barrel out and re chamber/rifle it for the new cartridge? or possibly to lengthen the chamber as in .260 remington to 6.5x55? Cheers DB Edited November 20, 2009 by danebrewer10 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Hi all, If there is a rifle say that you really like but isn't offered in the caliber you want... is it possible to order it in a small cal. and bore the barrel out and re chamber/rifle it for the new cartridge? or possibly to lengthen the chamber as in .260 remington to 6.5x55? Cheers DB There is not too much that is impossible...BUT...original barrel thickness must be considered when boring it out and chamber length, and serious tools and skills are required for such an operation. As it happens I know a man who has the tools and skills but the price will most commonly make it prohibitive! Quote Link to post
danebrewer10 6
hmmm that's what I thought.... mega expensive and not really that practical.....alas.... Quote Link to post
RicW 67
hmmm that's what I thought.... mega expensive and not really that practical.....alas.... It would be cheaper and safer to buy a proprietary barrel. Look up Border Barrels. Their own name barrels are world class, even the American sites recommend them. Cheaper but still seriously good gear are their Archer barrels. They will supply a gun fitted with one or t'other. Ric Quote Link to post
Effortless 0
Depends how much metal needs removing... I have a Brno ZKK 602 that has been re-chambered from 458 Win Mag to 458 Lott... such a minor change that it will still safely fire 458 Win Mags. I believe this conversion takes little more than a few turns with the appropriate reamer. And as Deker says, be careful if you have to remove a significant amount of barrel material. Effortless. Spangle 0
If you change barrels and opt for a different calibre just make sure that your new calibre is suited to the action size,...i.e short or long! Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
technically you could do it but it depends on what you want, the .260 rem is a very good short action round, and is suited to short action, you could also go for 6.5x55 SE BUT its NOT suited to short action, and you wont get the best from the round as you will only be able to handle the lighter weight ranges and the bullet would have to be seated deep, droping case capacity and also therefore velocity.... i had to read this post a few times i was i wasn't sure what you wanted to achieve.....? WHAT CALIBRE do you actually WANT....? The 6.5x55 likes to be seated long and you get the best results accuracy wise when doing so....... i'm still not sure what you want to achieve but i hope this helps.. Snap. Quote Link to post
Big Dog222 0
Make sure your drill battery is well charged and you have a pound of butter to lube the drill bit before you start. Sorry I just had to Buy standard or go to Border Barrel etc Quote Link to post
