I just got a call from them and they've informed me that 2 of them died from Parvo.... what the f**K? I just talked to them 5 days ago and they said the pups were fat and healthy.... of course I'm disapointed but also shocked.... I guess they unknowingly took in a rescue dog that was strickend and it ripped through thier kennel... they lost a couple others as well..... now I'm torn.... I still want the one pup but I don't want it to be sick.... the breeder is well respected.... I've just never heard of this disease being so quick and deadly.... what are the chances the surviving pup will not get it..... did the breeder do anything wrong.... well my dep. on the 3 covers the cost of the 1.... I'm worried..... I might back out of the whole deal..... and find another breeder..... TOPPER 1,809 Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 theres a possabilaty they got the parvo from a vaccination, if the vaccination s got warm [ over 8 degrees c ] then the live virus in the vaccination could have given them the parvo if the remaining pup avoid s the parvo then there should be no problems , but if it gets parvo and gets over it then theres a good chance it will always be weak and should be avoided atb top Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Guest it's all my land after 12 Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 Went to a vetinary seminar some 25 years ago and parvo raised it's ugly head then, was told pups are most vulnerable between 6 weeks of age and vaccination, due to the fact that they are in the weaning period and are no longer receiving any immunity through the bitches milk that they had done until that point in time, however at 14 weeks these puppies should have been innoculated, i have in the past got the vet to innoculate whole litters at 6 weeks of age, mainly for self assurance that the pups are afforded the best possible chance/start in life, cheap at the price. salclalin 240 Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 Don't even Contemplate Getting the Pup.Even if it seems Ok it could still Carry the Disease.I had a Healthy Pup from Cornwall 25yrs ago,all seemed well until i went to the Kennel one Morning the Pup was Dead.Over the Next week i Lost two Adult Lurchers to Parvo.This was when Parvo first started to appear.I hate the Fecking Disease. I'm still sceptical.... if I had another dog here at home I would surely not recieve this pup..... since my kennel is empty there's no other dogs to get infected.... I might recieve the pup anyway.... but in the spring of next year I hope to get 2 more pups from a completely different kennel on the west coast..... Quote Link to post Share on other sites
borntohunt 19 Posted November 21, 2009 Report Share Posted November 21, 2009 one of my adult lurchers got parvo last year... lost a lot of weight over night and was given a 25% chance of pulling through, the vet i spoke to advised putting him on a drip for a week might improve his chances 50/50, but i decided with instruction from another vet to syringe feed him liquid life aid, water and glucose every 2 hours, in a few days he was coming round and hasnt looked back since. is a nasty virus, i was finding 2ft square puddles of blood in my kennels and was having to change clothes everytime i went into the sick dog, so as not to carry it into the others. then after it was cleared up parvocide was used on all the kennels and runs. kev Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Sounds like patterdales are fairly rare in your neck of the woods, but it makes sense to be on the safe side and maybe wait a little bit longer and get a pup/s you can be more sure of.
