barrel cleaning .22lr

Recommended Posts

i have only had rifles about 18 months or so and i have heard conflicting reports from various shooting mates about how often to clean the barrel inside, some say often and the others say every 50 shots is about right? can you fellas shed abit of light on how often and if i need to use the wire brush or just patches soaked in cleaners or oil etc.... any help much appreciated by this noobie. i have been pulling patches thro with cleaners fairly regularly and have only used the wire brush about 4 times.

If you are only using sub sonic lead, then not that often, perhaps a mop through from time to time to get the crud out and an occassional decent clean to remove any lead deposits, which should not be too difficult.

If you are using high velocity copper coats then more regular and better cleaning would normally be required!

When I first got mine I was cleaning it all the time, I enjoyed doing it!

I was told to pack it in, bit of a bad habit!!!!!!

Now clean it every 500 rounds or so, the moderator gets a bit clogged up at 1000 rounds so needs a strip down and rebuild.

If you enjoy cleaning it then carry on, otherwise just keep it obviously clean and dry. Ie pull a patch through with moisture repellant, wipe dirt, muck and wet off and some say take the mod off for storage!

Much more important to clean the crud out of the moderator every 55 shots or so :victory:

Edited to add every 500 shots :whistling:
