snaring and body grip trapping

Recommended Posts

nice bag. only one question on the pic of the rabbit in the body grip.is it my imagination or is the spring fitted in such a way that it is putting no presure on the arms that grip the rabbit? it just looks differant to the ones that i have used over the years, thier arms grip either side of the spring

The conibear trap works by the two square jaws pivoting around their center. So when the spring is compressed, those jaws rotate about the middle 90 degrees, and in the case of the picture they would appear to be vertical (with the spring squished up between them) if the trap were set. Once fired the spring moves outward pushing the jaws together as you see them. I guess the important thing to note is the jaws rotate about an axis going through their middle.

take another look at the pic and you will see that the spring is sprung as you said, but, if you look closly it looks to me as if the two ends of the spring that wrap round the trap body are so that if the spring were to be pressed together neither of the bars would rotate because they are not either side of the pivit piont. if you have a copy ov the book Trapping by James Bateman ( not traps and trapping) look on page 43. in this pic you will see that even when sprung each spring arm would still sit either side of the pivit point.

that foto looks good to me , the drawing in the book is wrong, but its the trigger thats drawn wrong , the spring can be pushed up like the drawing or at a 90 degree angle like the foto

yes the trigger in the picture in the book is drawn wrong. ive just had a good look at the trap that i have in my hand and i can now see where i went wrong.yes you are right, the spring has moved through 90degrees whilst springing, my apologies. Been a long time since ive used the body grip, now use fenns. cheaper and i get on better with them. Taking nothing away from teejaa, still a good bag.
