Which Scope for 22 lr

Hello folks,

 

Ive had a 22 rifle rimfire for some time now. I use it for lamping rabbits mostly.

 

I'd like to know what scope you guys would recomend for field of view, works good in dark with a lamp, and most of all maintains its zero.

 

What do you think is a good quality tough versatile scope that will last.

 

I dont mind if i have to save for a while as long as i get good value for money. I realize you get what you pay for.

I would strongly recommend a Edgar Brothers 3-9x50 scope and Sportsmatch mounts ive had this on my rimfire for about six years now and shot hundreds of rabbits with the lamp with it and its had some rough conditions thrown at it. Weather and bumps + scrapes and its just so reliable non of the i better check my zero ive just missed a few bunnies maybe ive knocked it again.Also try Hawke 3-9x50 AO IR ive had this on my spring airgun which recoils more than my rimfire its also very good i think and its hit the mark time after time for a few years now and been trouble free.But if you want to spend alot then look at Leupold they do some great sights just very pricey but they will last a long time and the glass quality is great ultra clear and the parralex is good on them to.Hope this helps.

Get a fixed mag scope like a 6x or 8x, cheap job will do, I've tried a few and always seem to go back to the cheapo nikko stirling x6 mag, great for eye relief, when aiming at different angles out the window when lamping...

What ranges do you want to shoot at?

Are you looking to extend the ranges you shoot at? Can you confidently judge range, and hold under over?

Do you shoot only one bullet type? i.e. 40 gr subs?

If your shooting at the usual .22 ranges then i can recommend the MTC Cobra 3x9-50. Really good at night under the lamp. I personally wouldn't spend a fortune on a scope for a .22lr especially if you do a lot of lamping. Just a decent quality mil dot reticuled scope. Then again i have been known to bash mine when lamping so i could be biased.

I would have to suggest from my experiences the JSR range of scopes offers exceptionally good glass on the whole. Built quality is not the best, dialing distances is not good and the scopes with allen key locking turrets drive me mad.

 

But I also suggest they do offer very good value for money!!

£60 would probably also buy you a Bushnell Banner or a 2nd hand White Tail Classic.

 

I have a Hawke Varmint II 3-10x44 which works well in the dark but planning to get a WTC when one comes along.

 

Personally a fixed mag would do me as I only ever shoot at 6x anyway. A mate has an S&B 6x42 but I get paranoid about knocking it cos they're so expensive.

On my .22 i have an edgar brothers 4-12x40 had it nearly 5 years now and haven't had to re zero it if i had to get another i would get a fixed scope as i never take mine of 7x mag but wouldn't spend alot for a scope to put it on a rimmy, no recoil to knock it about

Managed to get my WTC yesterday. Very good scope if keeping it low to the gun is important to you. A lot of the cheaper end scopes will use a 25mm tube and compensate with a large objective lenses but you can get just as good (if not better) light gathering with a 40mm objective lense if it has a 30mm body.

 

That being said, they are more expensive (although mine was £65 second hand and there is one here for that sort of money)

I agree with a fixed scope 8x50 or 8x56 for 22 lamping its all you'll ever need so get a good one.

The difference between a reasonably cheap scope and the best you can buy is only £300.

A Schmidt & Bender 8x56 is now only £450 and a will last you a lifetime.

i have a white tail 3.5-10x50mm on my .22lr and am very happy with it( normally set on 6x and not moved most bunnys between 50 and 70 meters)

good adjustment,clear optics,high light transmission(without the lamp). you do find second hand ones on here every now and again quite cheap.

hits the spot and thats what counts imo.

 

lots of good sights out there just a question of what to spend/which size and magnification suits your land and shooting.

I'm with the fixed mag boys on this one.

 

Once I had analyzed that all my shooting with the .22lr was 35 to 65 yds, using subs, I settled on a reasonable Nikko Sterling 6x42 scope.

Haven't needed anything better and havne't got the time to be messing about with parralax adjustment etc when a bunny pokes it's head up.
