I started a similar thread a few months ago after an article in the shooting times.

The well known keeper Lindsay Waddell stated that he was very impressed with this cross and he liked there versatility in both upland and thick lowland cover.

I also got a disappointing response in my thread, as most in this section will not entertain cross breeds and even more strangely will not even debate them.

The fact of the matter is that any cross is a gamble, you could end up with the best of both breeds and an excellent animal, or a below par animal not measuring up to either parent, either way you SHOULD end up with a dog that will work for you.

i had upland ranging to phesant style or ground, so basicly an all rounder, they look like very nice dogs (just like a labrador with wire hair) and from what ive met of them i really like them, quite alot of grouse keepers round me have them.

No no, not a pointless cross at all mate! You get the best of both breeds! I know several keepers with this very cross and the dogs are cracking workers on the fell.... id say they are better for the open country than the thick cover like brambles etc, but they will try anywhere thats a certainty!

 

A lot of pure wire haired pointers are too headstrong for the average grouse day, and require a firm handler and an experienced trainer, however the lab crosses seem very biddable, yet still have the nose and use the wind like the pointer, and many will point too. If I were still a hill keeper I would not say no to a well bred pointer/lab cross.

 

Im a spaniel man personally, dont like labs at all(would have a springer/lab anyday), they are not for me, and probably wouldnt get a pure GWP either, but if I was still a hill keeper, I would certainly not say no to a well bred lab/gwp cross. All the workers ive seen, and thats about 6/7 have been top notch.

The biggest problem you may have RB, will be finding one.

 

As for cover i think it will be down to the breeding on the Lab side as all GWP i have seen will face any cover.

The Lab bitch pup i have at the minute will face cover like a spaniel but not all Labs are like her.

only been beating four weeks but where i go keeper got gwp x wired haired vizla i no its not lab but its an amazing dog. it has so much stamina is unreal. my favourite dog up there except mine.

Is this the sort of thing that you are thinking of? These are two brothers 2yrs apart. They are Choc lab x Italian Spinone. I bred the first litter for my own use after first doing some research into the colour genetics of both breeds. I was very pleased with the results. The darker dog in the photo is out of the first litter. I was asked if i would consider a repeat mating which I did and the result was very similar. Both dogs in the photo are on point at a cock pheasant. Hope this helps?

ps: The reason why I did the cross in the first place is, I liked the working ability of the Spinone but felt they were to big and clumbersome but the other pedigree breeds were either too hot headed or just didn't appeal to me.

Keeper on my brothers estate brings two beating at the grouse, very competent dogs and good allrounders.

Excellent for counting/beating and can also track deer and do foxes etc. Probably a good buy if you think you are up to the job of training it properly.

i have an english pointerxlab and the thing is amazin he will work all day on the moore or in the woods the ground he covers is truly unbeleivabe and he never misses a bird. hes my long range runner specialist has wiped many a pure labs eye including my own on long pricked birds. i would have a kennel full of them if i was still a keeper (wish i was) if there is a bird in whatever cover no matter how thick he goes in has no hair left on his nose poor sod. and he points in a fashion not field trial stuff but long enough to get there with a gun but then so did my old lurcher. get one if you can find find 1 mines was out of a experimental but intentionally bred litter. i would only go the 1st cross. i havnt seen a gwpxlab but i have seen a essxgwp and it was a beating machine looked like a small gwp keeprs wife on a shoot where i beat has it it picks up for her to.

 

sorry its not that good a pic hes the 1 lyin down lookin right of course he has a full pointer whiplike tail can clear a coffee teble in one sweep.

i have a pointer x lab bitch, work any cover doesnt miss a thing,

verry keen worker , not to good at retriving but wat a flushing dog.

she 4 yr old ,mated her back to a lab , pups turned out ok .

I have seen 2 GWP x Lab's although unfortunately never seen any work, both seemed to have taken slightly more to the Wirehair and looked like strongly built Wirehair's (nice).

One of them is owned by a Keeper who i know would never keep any rubbish, he claims it suits his needs very well as he can allow it to range on Grouse or hunt very closely in thick woodland, he also uses it allot on vermin and Fox drives.

I have one pic on my pc that will give a better view from the front. as soon as I can figure out how to change the size without ruining the photo I will. if I make it to small I wont be able to blow it back to its original format without it going blurred!
