Guest bodgerbear
Good afternoon all. Well on Saturday I will be going out on my very first ferreting trip with a few of my ferrets. Ive got a ferret finder and now know how to use it BIG thank you to Stubby for explaining how. Now one thing that puzzles me is how to correctly set a purse net (I have done a few searches on here and cant seem to find anything). I watched a DVD the other day and the bloke on it was putting one end of the net down the hole, and then pinning the other end over the hole. No I was just going to plonk the net over the hole and peg it. Is this another techneque he's doing or am I looking at it wrong? I will take some photo's if I can and at least if nothing else people cant have a laugh at me . . The other thing is Ive got a kit from this year 8 months now and he is massive. I took him to a game show recentley and evryone commented that he was too big for working, could this be true? Will let you all know how it goes Rob Edited November 17, 2009 by bodgerbear Quote Link to post

The one 8,533
Every holes differnt so you got to look at which way you think the rabbits going to bolt ,but i try to put a bit of the net down the hole and spread the rest over the burrow and that way when the rabbits stepping on the bottom of the net it should be yours ,But a lot of guys seem to try to spread the bagging of the net over the dirt at the top of the hole thats just a waste mate your never going to get a rabbit bolting there Quote Link to post

jamie g 17
as above but before placing the net down make sure there is no bits of twigs or leaves round the hole. i clean them out the way. just one less thing for the net to get stuck on. if the rabbit hits it. seen it before rabbit hits net and the thing didnt shut right becasue some twigs was in the way./ make sure the peg is in the ground firm to Quote Link to post

Guest bodgerbear
Well rain stopped play on Saturday, so Sunday morning I got everything sorted, and went off on my permission. Found a small warren with about 5 holes, netted them all up (Thanks for the advice guys) and got one of my jills with a collar on and started her off. Well within 5 min see this brown thing shoot out of one of the holes, and me and me mate both thought it was the ferret, so went to pick her up and low and behold it was a rabbit, and it had struggled out of the net and shot off by the time I got to it . So first lesson learnt re-set the net and continued to wait, another 10 min and bang bunny number 2 comes running out of the same hole and im on top of him quickly this time. My jill comes out just behind bunny so im happy now. Now it may have been a bit premature but due to the failing light and heavy down pour (We didn't manage to get out till just after 3pm) we pack up and have a wonder around the permission to look for more warrens for next week. Now learnt me second lesson don't buy second hand tools (Got a shovel off a car boot for £2) my mate wasn't sure if this hole was a pipe or not so had a little dig and the bloody handle snapped off . So have got to source another on for saturday. Have found a huge warren with about 20 + holes but think I'll wait till I get a bit more experince as its spread over a huge area. Thought I would give everyone a smile about my first time out. Hope you enjoy it Quote Link to post
cumbrian-whippet 1
2 words BOLT HOLES! they can be a bugger to spot often almost covered with grass etc but have a good look around before entering a ferret as 9 times out of 10 the rabbit will bolt out of the hole you have missed! also i like to leave 15- 20 mins before entering the ferret after netting up because spooked rabbits will lie up more so it mite sound like a waste of time waiting 20 minutes to enter the ferret but it will save time having to locate the ferret and dig to it.
