My two rescue ferrets had a fight on Sunday. I herd screaming so ran to stop them. Being new to ferrets I found this worrying. :shok: Today they had another fight. There was a lot of screaming. When I went to look the Jill was shaking in a corner. I gave her a hug. It worries me to hear them screaming like that. Should I be worried or is this normal?

Two answers yes and no. I take it ones male ones female if that's the case the male is probably getting a bit frisky and roughing her up a bit it will settle down if it's two jills fighting you may have to permanently seperate them as like people sometimes one jill just does not like another if one is weaker this WILL lead to a bullying problem.

I speak from experience I rescued a jill who'd had her teeth removed, put her in the court and all hell broke loose as expected really this is usually just sorting out dominance and pecking order after two days of squeals and squabbles i looked in sneakily to work out what was going on and one jill was bullying toothy constantly so I seperated toothy and put her in a cage with one of my friendlier jills who also happens to be top dog in the main court after a few weeks I put the two seperated jills back in the main court no more than 20 seconds past before the bully jill was dragging toothy again but the polecat who'd been in isolation with her came to her aid literally by pulling the bully off and giving her a taste of it. Since then I only get problems during the breeding season so when I seperate the males I seperate the two jills aswell

yes one is a jill one is a hob. they are both done, so thought he would not try to mate her

Mate fezzers will squabble over sweet nothing. The male, balls or not will still want to be the top man in the cage and he will tell any ferret nearby just as much.

My two biggest males were a nightmare for about an hour, after that they live together permanently including during the breeding season with no problems. The more dominant of the two disappeared recently and Ike who was left seemed very depressed and lonely for weeks like he missed his best mate even though he was in a court full. They slept and played together all the time and I guess he missed that. The point is every ferret is different like dogs are, some people would never keep two entire males together at all let alone during the season I knew my males so I was ok with it. Get to know your ferrets because the best advice in the world may not apply to your little ones.

thanks. i just hope theydont end up hurting eachother

They will just keep an eye and any wounds clean and sprinkle antibiotic powder on.(If you can't get this split a low dose amoxycillin capsule and use some powder out of that) It will look rank but it will also heal.

It can be difficult to know when enoughs enough , from experience i know some ferrets dont do well when there being got at .

I use a few simple pointers , if the ferret on the receiving end of the punnishment starts to drop weight , loose condition i remove it , constant attacks from other ferrets can & does depress there cage mates if its allowed to contine unchecked

All you can do is observe there squables & if you feel the jill isnt fairing well then remove her

IF i remember rightly your Jill is quite old and the hob is a lot younger. Be careful hes not being to rough as shes getting on and propably just wants some peace , maybe get a younger jill as a mate for him so your older Jill gets some peace and quiet. Did you get them from a rescue ? If so maybe contact them to see if they have another Ferret to take the strain off of the older Jill.

I reckon you will get a lot of noise and no actual damage done to either ferret its up to you only you know your ferrets do you want to split them up or is it a petty squabble and it will sort its self out

yes there are from a recuse. just check on them and the hob was having another go at the jill. he was trying to put food in the sleep box and wanted her out. iv had to leave him in the run for now :(

Do you know if they were recently done as sometimes it can take a good few weeks for the hormones to settle down after being neutered

the hob was born in the rescue so he was done when young , he then went to a couple for a few years but was returned after the cople split up. so he has been a pet ferret. the jill was used for breedig and was handed over to the rescue when she was to old to breed. she is 6 and the hob is 4

I reckon off the info given that you have an anti social hob in t'old days he would be called a liner (A big nasty boy with a long string round his neck who dosen't like other ferrets) and used to drive smaller jills of a kill then dug to maybe get another cage put the cages so they can see each other and seperate, then introduce slowly under supervision may work may not.
